Tensions escalate as Pakistan vows response to Indian strikes

ISLAMABAD/ NEW DELHI/ MUZAFFARABAD: Tensions escalate in India and Pakistan, after India launches missile strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Pakistan says six locations were attacked and claims to have shot down five Indian fighter jets, India has not confirmed this.

Pakistan says 26 people have been killed and 46 injured by air strikes and firing along the Line of Control.

Meanwhile, India’s army says at least 15 civilians were killed by Pakistani shelling on its side of the de facto border.

India says the missile strikes are in response to a deadly militant attack on Indian tourists in Pahalgam last month.

India claims it has “evidence pointing towards the clear involvement of Pakistan-based terrorists, external” in the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan denies any link.

Indian-administered Kashmir has seen a decades-long insurgency which has claimed thousands of lives. India and Pakistan both claim Kashmir in full.

26 civilians martyred, 46 injured: Pak Army

Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, confirmed on Wednesday that 26 civilians were martyred and 46 others injured in overnight Indian airstrikes targeting multiple civilian areas across Pakistan.

Speaking during a briefing on Wednesday, the DG ISPR said that India carried out 24 airstrikes on six different locations inside Pakistani territory.

He said that 13 people were martyred in Bahawalpur’s Ahmedpur East area. The deceased included two three-year-old girls, seven women, and four men. In addition, 37 individuals were injured including nine women and 28 men.

In a separate incident near Muzaffarabad, a strike on Bilal Mosque resulted in three fatalities, while two children, a girl and a boy sustained injuries, he added.

Death toll rises to 15: Indian Army

The Indian army has said that artillery firing by Pakistan has led to the deaths of 15 civilians and injured 43 since Tuesday night.

It said that the shelling hit civilian areas in Poonch and Tangdar in Indian-administered Kashmir.

As we have been reporting, Pakistan has said 26 people have been killed in the air strikes and cross-border firing.

Pakistan rejects India’s terrorist camp claims

We are now bringing you more from the statement issued after Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) meeting, chaired by PM Shehbaz Sharif.

Pakistan said it had rejected India’s claims of terrorist camps on its soil, reiterating that the allegations were baseless.

“It would also be recalled that immediately after 22 April 2025, Pakistan made a sincere offer for a credible, transparent and neutral investigation, which unfortunately was not accepted,” the statement said.

India-Pakistan tension a shame: US

US President Donald Trump termed rising tension between India and Pakistan a shame, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to officials in the nuclear-armed rivals after India attacked several sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

India is an important US partner for Washington, which aims to counter China’s rising influence, while Pakistan remains an ally, despite its diminished importance after the US withdrawal from neighboring Afghanistan in 2021.
