New Delhi, Sept. 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that differences between India and China do not develop into disputes, while calling for a strategic and long-term approach to bilateral relations.
The two leaders held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Prime Minister Modi was accompanied by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.
During the meeting, the leaders welcomed the steady progress in India-China relations since their previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025. According to an official release, they agreed that both countries should view their ties from a strategic and long-term perspective and ensure that differences do not turn into disputes.
Prime Minister Modi said bilateral relations should be guided by the principles of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.
He stressed that peace and tranquillity in the border areas remain an essential foundation for the continued development of India-China relations. He also underlined the importance of both sides adhering to existing agreements and understandings concerning border issues.
The two leaders expressed their commitment to pursuing a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement of the boundary question, taking into account the broader political perspective of bilateral relations and the long-term interests of the people of both countries.
They also noted progress in people-to-people ties and emphasised the need to further strengthen cultural exchanges, business linkages and mobility between India and China.
On economic and trade relations, Modi and Xi discussed the need to address concerns on both sides, including structural trade imbalances and supply-chain issues. They also stressed the importance of facilitating meaningful and predictable market access.
The two leaders agreed to continue expanding areas of common ground on regional and global issues and work together in addressing shared challenges.
Prime Minister Modi appreciated China’s support for India’s BRICS chairship and its contribution to the successful conduct of the 18th BRICS Summit.
According to Chinese officials, President Xi said China and India should view their relationship from a strategic perspective and keep the long-term development of bilateral ties in mind.
Xi noted that despite differences between the two countries, India and China have been able to support and assist each other in pursuing common development.
