Hyderabad, August 25 (Najaf Ali Shoukat-PMI) Prompt intervention by the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) helped save a victim from losing ₹85.20 lakh in a sophisticated “digital arrest” cyber fraud, officials said.

Shikha Goel, IPS, Director, Telangana Cyber Security Bureau, Telangana Police, said the case highlights the importance of immediately reporting suspected cyber fraud, as timely intervention can prevent substantial financial losses.

According to officials, cybercriminals targeted the victim by posing as senior law-enforcement personnel. The fraudsters allegedly informed the victim that his or her name had been linked to a serious criminal case and threatened arrest if immediate action was not taken. They used intimidation and psychological pressure to convince the victim that the matter was part of an official investigation.

The victim was allegedly directed to transfer a substantial amount of money as part of the purported investigation. The fraudsters reportedly maintained continuous communication with the victim and created an atmosphere of fear and urgency, a tactic commonly used in digital arrest scams.

After the matter was reported, TGCSB officials acted swiftly and coordinated with the concerned banks and financial institutions to prevent the fraudulent transactions. Their prompt intervention enabled authorities to stop the transfer and safeguard the entire ₹85.20 lakh from being siphoned off by the cybercriminals.

Officials said digital arrest scams are increasingly relying on impersonation, threats and fake legal proceedings to deceive victims. Fraudsters often claim to be police officers, CBI officials, Enforcement Directorate personnel, customs officials or other government authorities. Victims are sometimes instructed to remain on video calls for extended periods and are threatened with arrest, account freezing or other legal action.

Shikha Goel, IPS, advised citizens to remain alert and not panic when receiving suspicious calls from people claiming to be law-enforcement or government officials. She stressed that genuine investigating agencies do not conduct investigations through video calls or demand money from citizens to avoid arrest.

Citizens should not share bank account details, OTPs, passwords, Aadhaar information or other sensitive personal information with unknown callers.

TGCSB appealed to citizens to immediately report suspected cyber financial fraud by contacting the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or using the official cybercrime reporting portal. Victims should also promptly inform their banks so that preventive action can be initiated.

Officials stressed that every minute is crucial in financial cyber fraud cases. Early reporting enables banks and law-enforcement agencies to trace transactions, place holds on suspicious accounts and prevent or recover defrauded money. (pressmediaofindia.com)

New Delhi, August 25 (PMI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set a one-year deadline for the complete implementation of India’s three new criminal laws, saying the move is aimed at ensuring the disposal of criminal cases up to the Supreme Court within three years and increasing the conviction rate by 25 per cent.

Shah made the remarks while addressing the valedictory session of the two-day ninth National Security Strategies (NSS) Conference-2026 organised by the Intelligence Bureau, which concluded in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) came into force on July 1, 2024, replacing the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act.

“There will be 100 per cent implementation of the three new laws in the next one year,” Shah said, adding that this would help ensure criminal cases are disposed of up to the Supreme Court within three years and increase the conviction rate by 25 per cent.

The Home Minister stressed the importance of integrating data from the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS), NATGRID and National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS).

He urged young police and security officers to use data integration, analysis and artificial intelligence to develop actionable intelligence, identify criminal modus operandi and anticipate emerging security threats.

Focus on Emerging Security Challenges

Shah said the National Security Strategies platform should look 15 to 20 years ahead and formulate strategies to prevent potential security challenges from developing into major threats.

He claimed that the government had succeeded in addressing three major internal-security challenges—Naxalism, terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and insurgency in the Northeast—and credited the police forces of the states, central agencies and Central Armed Police Forces for the achievement.

He said that if previous governments had anticipated challenges such as narcotics, Naxalism and insurgency in the Northeast before they became serious problems, the country could have avoided dealing with their consequences for decades.

Shah cited the banning of the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the dismantling of its network as an example of effective Centre-state coordination.

Border Security and Infiltration

The Home Minister said he had visited all states sharing land borders with other countries during the past eight months and discussed a four-pronged approach to strengthening border security.

He said the government’s objective was to make the country free from illegal infiltration at the earliest.

Describing infiltration as a threat to national security, the economy and demographic stability, Shah stressed that only Indian citizens have the right to live in the country.

Stronger Anti-Terror Strategy

On terrorism, Shah called for effective implementation of the PRAHAR document and urged security agencies to dismantle terrorist networks comprehensively.

He said strong internal security was essential for achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047.

“Whenever a country decides to move forward, challenges inevitably emerge both from within the country and from across the world. We must visualise these challenges in advance,” he said.

Three-Pronged Fight Against Narcotics

Shah directed police forces across the country to implement the Narcotics Control Vision Document 2026-2029 to protect the younger generation from drug abuse.

He advocated a three-pronged strategy of “Detect, Disrupt and Destroy” to achieve the goal of a drug-free India.

He said the Centre and state governments, along with their various departments, would have to work together to combat the narcotics threat.

Fugitive Offenders and Multi-Agency Coordination

Shah said the government had strengthened its system for dealing with fugitives and claimed that around 274 fugitives had been brought back to India from abroad between 2019 and 2026.

He urged states to set targets for bringing fugitives living abroad back under the jurisdiction of Indian law.

He also said the Multi Agency Centre (MAC) had been upgraded to provide a platform capable of generating multidimensional intelligence and facilitating better coordination among security agencies.

Cybercrime and Global Instability

The Home Minister said national security policies could no longer be formulated in isolation and must take into account global instability, energy and resource insecurity, supply-chain disruptions, radicalisation and cyber-enabled misinformation warfare.

He called for early identification of emerging threats so they could be neutralised before turning into major challenges.

“By creating such an ecosystem, we will be able to create a secure, infiltrator-free and narcotics-free India,” Shah said.

The conference was held in hybrid mode and attended by around 850 senior security and police officers from across the country. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Mahesh Dixit, CBI Director Praveen Sood and Research and Analysis Wing Secretary Parag Jain were among those present.

According to the Union Home Ministry, the first day of the conference focused on counter-terrorism challenges, intelligence fusion and analysis through the Multi Agency Centre, narcotics control, detection and deportation of illegal migrants, cybercrime and Pakistan-linked proxy warfare.

The NSS Conference has been conducted annually in hybrid mode since 2021 on the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hyderabad, August 25 (PMI): The process of issuing notices and conducting inquiries under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Telangana has entered its final stage. Election Commission officials are expediting the preparation and printing of notices.

According to Election Commission guidelines, formal inquiries into voters who have been served notices will begin on August 27 and continue until September 20.

Telangana Chief Electoral Officer Sudarshan Reddy held an important video conference with District Election Officers (DEOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and issued strict and transparent guidelines to ensure that no eligible voter is removed from the electoral rolls.

The Election Commission has issued clear and binding instructions to all Booth Level Officers (BLOs), Booth Level Agents (BLAs) and election personnel. BLOs must deliver printed notices to voters at least 48 hours before the scheduled hearing and immediately record the details through the mobile application.

Voters can submit their certificates and supporting documents through three methods:

  1. Through the online portal
  2. Through the BLO app
  3. In person before the ERO/AERO during the hearing

The Election Commission has made it clear that voters must upload original documents only through the online system. Xerox copies will not be accepted.

Except for minor discrepancies in names or ages, verification of other unmapped or irregular certificates will be carried out by DEOs through the concerned government departments.

To make the inquiry process voter-friendly and transparent, the Election Commission has directed officials to conduct hearings and inquiries at local Gram Panchayat buildings or ward offices.

In both rural and urban areas, public announcements will be made through traditional drum-beating/public announcements (munadi) to inform voters about the venue and date of the hearings.

Gram and Ward Sabhas will be held across the state on August 27. During these meetings, the names included in the draft electoral rolls and the names deleted under the ASDD categories — Absent, Shifted, Dead and Duplicate — will be read out publicly.

Special arrangements have also been made to prevent voter harassment and ensure transparency. Special appeal cells have been activated at District Election Officer offices to address complaints relating to notices or hearings.

If an ERO is not satisfied with the certificates submitted by a voter, the voter will be immediately informed of the decision through Form-7.

A strict speaking order for deletion of a voter’s name will be issued only when the ERO is fully satisfied that the name should be removed from the electoral roll.

Election authorities will also verify whether the voter appeared personally at the hearing. If a voter requests additional time to provide further clarification or submit additional certificates, a final opportunity will be provided before publication of the final electoral roll. The Commissioner’s Task Force, Secunderabad Zone, along with personnel from Ramgopalpet, Chilkalguda, OU City and Domalguda police stations, conducted raids at several clinics based on credible information, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vaibhav Gaikwad Raghunath said.

Police alleged that the accused administered IV saline, glucose, and injections to patients despite lacking valid medical qualifications. They reportedly posed as qualified practitioners and treated patients for financial gain, potentially putting their health at risk.

The arrested persons were identified as Nilagiri Prasad, 40, who operated Family Clinic near Badi Masjid in Chilkalguda; Adan Samdani, 23, who ran Samdani Clinic in Nallagutta, Ranigunj, while posing as a skin specialist; M Srinivas, 51, who had operated Sai Ram Clinic near Lower Tank Bund for 26 years; Peddapatla Sadanand, 52, who ran a clinic near Wesley Church in Chilkalguda; Chintaluri Ramesh, 45, who operated Sarojini Poly Clinic in Manikeshwar Nagar; and Shivaratri Lingaiah, 57, who ran Surya Clinic in the same locality.

According to police, none of the six possessed valid qualifications to practise modern medicine.

Prasad, who holds a Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) degree, allegedly obtained a fake MBBS certificate from an organisation called the “Indian Alternative Medical Council” and used it to practise as a general and paediatric specialist.

Samdani, who had studied up to Intermediate level, allegedly posed as a dermatologist for four years. Police said he was preparing a homemade petroleum-based gel using calcium powder and zinc oxide and marketing it as a treatment for psoriasis.

The other four accused allegedly acquired basic medical knowledge while working as hospital compounders before opening clinics without formal medical qualifications. Some had reportedly been operating their clinics for more than 20 years.

Fake certificates and medicines seized

Police seized a large quantity of material from the clinics, including a fake MBBS certificate, a BHMS certificate and mark list, rubber stamps, prescription pads, five stethoscopes, five BP machines, five pulse oximeters, four thermometers, 70 syringes, 277 injections, 933 tablets, 57 bottles of syrup, 16 ointments and glucose bottles.

Police appealed to the public to remain cautious of individuals claiming to be qualified medical practitioners without proper credentials and urged people to report suspected cases to the nearest police station.

Authorities warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found practising medicine fraudulently or endangering patients.

Hyderabad, August 24 (PMI): The Telangana Legislative Assembly is set to convene from September 7, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy informed MLAs during a meeting at the Secretariat on Monday, August 24.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister reviewed development programmes in various Assembly constituencies and directed legislators to expedite pending land acquisition for irrigation projects.

Reddy said delays in land acquisition could prevent projects from being completed. He assured MLAs that the government would provide funds for land acquisition, relief and rehabilitation, as well as obtaining necessary forest clearances. He also urged legislators to give greater attention to constituency-level development works.

Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, Ministers N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Tummala Nageswara Rao, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Seethakka, besides several MPs and MLAs, attended the meeting.

Resolution to Reduce Minimum Age for Contesting Elections

Although the government has not officially announced the duration or detailed agenda of the Assembly session, it is likely to consider a resolution seeking to reduce the minimum age for contesting Assembly and Lok Sabha elections from 25 to 21 years.

The resolution, if passed, would be forwarded to the Centre for consideration and possible introduction of an amendment Bill in Parliament.

The Chief Minister had earlier advocated lowering the minimum age for contesting elections to encourage greater participation of young people in legislative bodies. He proposed that candidates should be eligible to contest Assembly and Lok Sabha elections at the age of 21, while the minimum age for contesting Rajya Sabha elections should remain 25.

Reddy has argued that greater representation of young people is necessary to ensure that their views and concerns are reflected in the Legislative Assembly, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The Chief Minister had previously announced plans to convene a special session of the State Legislative Council and Assembly in the first week of August to pass a resolution on reducing the minimum age for contesting Assembly elections. However, the proposal was subsequently deferred.

Hundreds of mourners participated in the Chup Tazia procession. The mourners offered their condolences to Imam-e-Zamana (AS) with tearful eyes on the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hasan al-Askari (AS) and in remembrance of the return of the Ahl-e-Bait to Madina Munawara from the tragic events of Karbala.

With this procession, the two-month-and-eight-day mourning period came to an end.

The comments underscore the growing political risk for Trump as higher fuel prices collide with his campaign promise to lower energy costs, with Democrats already seeking to make the economic fallout from the Iran war an issue heading ⁠into the November midterm ⁠elections.

In a speech in Garden ‌City, NY, Trump said Americans who had to “pay a tiny little bit more for your gasoline” should remember that this was the cost of ensuring “a very evil country” ⁠could not have a nuclear weapon.

‘We’re really doing a great job’

“What we’re doing is a great service for the world, not only for ourselves … and we’re really doing ‌a great job,” said Trump, adding he would never apologize for attacking Iran.

Roughly 20 per cent of global oil and LNG shipments usually pass through the Strait of Hormuz, and the potential for long-term disruption has pushed up oil prices.

“After we finish defeating ⁠Iran … pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory ⁠of the United States,” said Trump, escalating his rhetoric over the ⁠vital ⁠waterway.

It was unclear how seriously Trump meant the remark or whether it represented a new policy position.

Iranian official reacts

Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, referenced Trump’s comments in a post on social media, saying the strait could not “be seized by tweet, nor by aircraft carrier, nor by issuing an order, nor by an election speech.”

He also said the strait would “only be closed and opened under Iran’s command.”

Trump’s remarks ⁠come as the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical pressure point for global energy markets.

DOHA/ TEHRAN: Iran has called for the release of three Iranian pilots it said were captured by Qatar after two fighter jets were hit by air defences during a military operation at the start of the US-Iran war.

In a letter to the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Iran’s Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh said the pilots Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian, and Imran Behroshian had been held captive for six months.

He said the body of a fourth pilot, Majid Kazemi, was returned after he was killed in the same operation on 2 March 2026, the third day of the war.

Qatar “categorically denied” Iran’s claims and said it was “surprised by these misleading statements”.

Gen Bagherzadeh said the three pilots had been captured by Qatar after they ejected from their jets during the combat mission on a Qatari military base.

In the letter to ICRC chief Mirjana Spoljaric, published by Iranian media, he accused Qatar of violating “the inalienable rights of these prisoners, contrary to all international laws and regulations”.

The letter also claimed the three pilots had not been allowed to meet or contact their families.

Qatar’s foreign affairs spokesperson Majed Mohammed Al Ansari said contact had been made with the pilots “after they violated Qatari airspace”, but it did not receive a response.

“The necessary measures were taken to defend our territory in accordance with international law,” he added in a statement on social media.

Al Ansari said Qatar’s search and rescue teams “carried out their duties to the fullest extent in searching for the pilots’ remains”.

HARARE: Twenty-two more bodies have been recovered after a boat accident in Zimbabwe, taking the death toll to 68, police said on Saturday.

The ferry capsized on Tuesday on Lake Kariba, on the border with Zambia. An investigation has suggested it was overloaded when it turned over during heavy winds.

Eighteen children were among the people killed, Zimbabwe’s police said, in what is believed to be the country’s deadliest such disaster.

Most of the passengers are believed to be villagers and fish traders who lived around the lake.

Officials said the vessel was authorized to carry 90 people but was packed with 114 adults, five crew members and an unspecified number of children.

Lt Col Joseph Muchechesi, commander of the boat regiment involved in the search operation, said: “So far today we have managed to take 22 bodies. We are confident that we will manage to retrieve all the bodies.”

The civil protection unit said on Wednesday that 77 people had been rescued.

Hundreds of people gathered at the district hospital in the lakeside town of Kariba to identify the bodies of their relatives and loved ones.

A public memorial service was held in Kariba, nearly 280km (175 miles) north-west of the capital Harare, on Thursday before the burials started.

Survivors said they pleaded with the ferry driver to turn back as the vessel had begun taking on water soon after departing.

Chance Siyamavhu, 45, told Agence France-Presse: “Thank God that a wave pushed the sinking vessel and we managed to climb on top.

“When the boat capsized, most of the people scrambled to get the lifejackets but most of them did not even know how to use them.

“Most people could not make it.”

Lake Kariba is the world’s largest manmade lake by volume. It stretches more than 200km (124 miles) and is up to 40km (25 miles) wide in places.

It was created in the 1950s during British colonial rule, when the Zambezi River was dammed, displacing about 57,000 people.

In 2014, 26 people, 24 of them children, drowned in Zambia’s part of the lake, when the boat meant to transport them to Independence Day celebrations capsized.
