TEHRAN/ KUWAIT CITY/ BEIRUT : The United States has carried out new strikes on an Iranian military site allegedly posing a threat to US forces and maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, according to news reports.
Iranian media have reported that US forces struck near the Bandar Abbas port, causing no damage or casualties.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later said it launched an attack on an “American airbase” in retaliation for the Bandar Abbas strike, and warned of “more decisive” action should US “aggression” continue, according to state media.
Kuwait’s military said its air defences confronted “hostile” missiles and drones, without providing information on where the attack came from.
The Israeli military has issued forced displacement orders for the entire population of southern Lebanon, threatening them to flee north of the Zahrani River, some 40km (25 miles) from Israel’s border, as all areas south of the river are now “combat zones“.
Aid agencies warn of an “absolute catastrophe” in southern Lebanon amid Israel’s attacks and its intensifying ground invasion.
Washington and Tehran have issued conflicting statements on negotiations to end the US-Israel war on Iran with US President Donald Trump saying there would be no easing of sanctions on Iran to reach a deal.
Iranian media reports that three explosions were heard earlier this morning to the east of the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, which sits on the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian air defences were activated for a short period of time after the blasts were heard, according to reports.
The Kuwaiti military said its air defences responded to “hostile missile and drone attacks” as air sirens sounded across the country.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that Iranian forces fired on an “American airbase” in the region in response to an earlier US attack near the port city of Bandar Abbas, which sits on the Strait of Hormuz.
Media reported that US forces shot down four Iranian drones and attacked a ground control station in Bandar Abbas, citing unnamed US officials. Iran’s Tasnim news agency cited military officials as saying that there were no injuries or property damage from the US strikes.
The rising tension in the region came after Trump insisted on Wednesday that “nobody’s going to control” the Strait of Hormuz, in reference to the negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
A female Israeli soldier has been killed in “combat”, and two others were injured in the same incident in northern Israel, the military said.
The US has added Iran’s recently-created Persian Gulf Strait Authority to its sanctions list.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military has issued evacuation orders for large parts of southern Lebanon, declaring the areas “combat zones” ahead of fresh strikes against Hezbollah.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) urged residents to move north of the Zahrani River, about 40km (25 miles) from the border. The IDF said it would act “with extreme force”, accusing Hezbollah of repeated ceasefire violations.
It is the largest evacuation order since the ceasefire took effect on 17 April, covering about 14% of Lebanese territory.
Earlier on Wednesday, Israel carried out strikes on the southern city of Tyre. Hezbollah, which has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire, said its fighters had clashed with Israeli troops.
Wednesday’s strikes came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced an expansion of its ground operation following Hezbollah drone attacks on troops occupying part of southern Lebanon and on civilians in northern Israel. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
