Hyderabad | ‘Victim’ Turns Accused in Shocking Twist to Suicide Attempt Case

Hyderabad, April 26 (PMI) In a dramatic turn of events, a case involving a domestic worker who allegedly attempted suicide in front of the State Human Rights Commission office has taken a new direction. Police have revealed that the woman, initially believed to be a victim of harassment, was in fact involved in a series of thefts and staged the suicide attempt to evade arrest.

According to the Gandhi Nagar police, the accused, Vemula Shravani, a resident of Kavadiguda, had been working as a housemaid in an apartment for the past five years. During February and March, she allegedly stole gold ornaments, including a diamond ring and a gold chain weighing around 3.5 tolas, from one flat. In another flat, she reportedly took a mangalsutra weighing 4.25 tolas.

Following complaints from the residents, police grew suspicious of Shravani and brought her in for questioning. Fearing that she would be caught, she allegedly staged a suicide attempt by pouring petrol on herself in front of the State Human Rights Commission office in Nampally, accusing the police of harassment.

The incident created a sensation, prompting the Commission Chairman, Justice Shameem Akhtar, to take suo motu cognisance and order an inquiry, directing the police to submit a detailed report.

During the investigation, police kept surveillance on Shravani and her husband, Chandrakanth. Using technical evidence, they confirmed the couple’s involvement in the thefts. It was also found that the stolen gold had been sold in phases at a jewellery shop in Domalguda.

The police have since taken the couple into custody and recovered around 7 tolas of gold. After they reportedly confessed to the crime, both were remanded to Chanchalguda Jail. (pressmediaofindia.com)
