New Delhi, Sept 17 (AbbasJaffri-PMI) The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has expressed concern over the Union Home Minister’s statement that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be implemented by 2029 in all states governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The Board said the statement raises important questions concerning India’s religious and cultural diversity and the fundamental rights of citizens.
The Board also claimed that permission for its proposed protest at Jantar Mantar under the “Save Constitution, Save Country” campaign was cancelled a day before the scheduled programme. The Board described the decision as unilateral and inappropriate.
AIMPLB spokesperson Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas said the Union Home Minister’s statement regarding the implementation of the UCC in all NDA-ruled states by 2029 had raised fresh concerns about India’s religious and cultural diversity and the fundamental rights of citizens.
He said Muslims consider the protection of Muslim Personal Law to be part of their religious and constitutional rights. According to him, India is a country of diverse religions, cultures and languages, and the Constitution provides protection to this diversity.
Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas further said that any policy that affects the country’s religious or cultural diversity could raise significant constitutional questions.
The AIMPLB spokesperson also objected to efforts to make the singing of all verses of Vande Mataram compulsory. He said making it mandatory for citizens to sing an entire particular song as an expression of patriotism raises important questions concerning religious freedom and civil liberties.
