Hyderabad/April 26 (PMI) Hyderabad police have arrested a 29-year-old domestic worker and her husband for their alleged involvement in multiple gold thefts across residential apartments in the city.
The accused, identified as Vemula Srivani and her husband Sheelam Chandrakanth (37), are residents of Domalguda. Srivani was employed as a house help at Necklace Pride Apartments in Kavadiguda, where she is suspected of stealing gold ornaments over a period of time.
Police revealed that Srivani had attempted self-immolation on April 7 outside the Human Rights Commission office in Nampally, accusing the police of harassment. However, investigators believe the act may have been staged to mislead authorities and avoid interrogation in connection with theft cases.
According to officials, the couple is linked to at least three theft cases—one registered at Chikalguda Police Station and two at Gandhi Nagar Police Station.
In one incident, Srivani allegedly stole gold jewellery including a diamond ring, pendant, plain ring, earrings, and a bracelet weighing around 3.5 tolas (40.8 grams) between late February and early March from Necklace Pride Apartments. The stolen items were later sold at a jewellery shop in Domalguda.
In another case in mid-March, she reportedly stole a gold mangalsutra along with a chain weighing approximately 4.25 tolas (49.57 grams) from a different apartment. She kept a portion of the jewellery for personal use and sold the remaining items.
Police have recovered about 6.8 tolas (79.31 grams) of gold from the accused. Both have been sent to judicial remand as further investigation continues.(pressmediaofindia.com)
