Washington/Tel Aviv Oct 29 (Agegcyes)US President Donald Trump has said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in “pretty good shape” following partial election results indicating a closely contested race. Trump also claimed that his endorsement had made a significant difference to Netanyahu’s electoral performance.
Speaking to Axios on Wednesday, Trump said, “I heard my endorsement made a big difference for Bibi,” referring to Netanyahu by his familiar nickname.
The US President said he had initially received what he described as “horror reports” about Netanyahu’s electoral prospects. However, he noted that the Israeli leader’s position appeared to have improved in the latest projections.
Asked whether he would consider helping efforts to form a coalition government under Netanyahu’s leadership, Trump responded, “I will take a look.”
Trump’s remarks came as partial election projections pointed to a tight contest, leaving the final political picture dependent on the outcome of the electoral process and subsequent coalition-building efforts.
The comments highlight Trump’s public support for Netanyahu as Israel’s political parties assess their positions and the prospects for forming the next government.
