Hyderabad, May 11 (PMII) Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) has urged the Telangana Government to purchase a dedicated elephant for carrying Bibi Ka Alam during the historic Xth Mohrrum procession while also demanding a detailed audit into Mohrrum-related civic works carried out over the past three years.
A delegation of MBT leaders led by Amjed Ullah Khan, along with Syed Imdad Hussain and Shakeel (Cricketer), met Mohammed Azharuddin and submitted a memorandum regarding the purchase of an elephant for the annual Bibi Ka Alam procession.
Amjed Ullah Khan said that after the death of “Rajini,” the elephant that traditionally carried Bibi Ka Alam, the Telangana Government has been forced to hire elephants from neighboring states like Kerala and Karnataka. He noted that these elephants are often not adequately trained for the sensitive and historic Mohrrum procession, leading to difficulties every year in arranging them at the last moment.
Responding to the delegation, Mohammed Azharuddin informed that the proposal to purchase elephants is under active consideration by the Telangana Government following repeated representations from MBT and several other organizations. He revealed that the matter was recently discussed with Anumula Revanth Reddy during a Minority Welfare Department review meeting.
According to the Minister, there is a strong possibility that this year’s Bibi Ka Alam procession may be carried on Telangana’s own elephant.
During the meeting, Amjed Ullah Khan also highlighted delays in Mohrrum review meetings and civic works. He alleged that review meetings are usually held only days before Mohrrum begins, causing sanctioned works to start around the 6th or 7th Mohrrum when Aashoorkhanas and Alawas are already crowded with devotees and Zayareens.
He urged the Minister to seek a comprehensive report from Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on works sanctioned during Mohrrum-2023, Mohrrum-2024, and Mohrrum-2025, and to verify how many projects were actually grounded and completed.
Amjed Ullah Khan alleged that a majority of the works sanctioned during the last three years are still pending execution. He further claimed that the process of identifying works, preparing estimates, securing approvals, and commencing execution requires at least 30 to 35 days.
He also alleged large-scale duplication and bogus billing in Mohrrum-related works undertaken annually by GHMC. (pressmediaofindia.com)
