Hyderabad, Sept. 13 (PMI) Several Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) garbage collection workers were detained by police on Saturday while attempting to stage a protest near the Telangana Legislative Assembly against proposed changes to the door-to-door garbage collection system.
The workers demanded continuation of the existing household garbage collection system, which they said had been in operation for decades. They also opposed the proposed involvement of private agencies in garbage collection services.
Carrying placards and raising slogans, the protesters sought protection of their existing work and urged the authorities not to replace the present system with a private agency model.
The workers said they preferred to continue with door-to-door garbage collection rather than being shifted to wage- or salary-based employment under a new arrangement.
Police detained several protesters when they attempted to move towards the Assembly premises and took them to a nearby police station. (pressmediaofindia.com)
