Tensions simmer after latest US-Iran clashes in Gulf

07-06-2026

WASHINGTON/ TEHRAN: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said no progress has been made in talks with the United States, though channels of communication remain open.

Araghchi also defended Tehran’s attacks on US allies in the Gulf region as “self-defence” and warned: “What sanctions and war failed to achieve won’t be won with more war.”

Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry said Iranian missile and drone attacks on Wednesday killed one person, injured more than 60 and damaged the country’s international airport.

US President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran are going “very well” and a deal to end the conflict “could happen over the weekend”, but added also: “Who knows?”

Al Jazeera’s Osama Bin Javaid said the “limits of the ceasefire are being tested on multiple fronts” after the latest US strikes on Iran and retaliatory Iranian attacks on US forces in Kuwait and Bahrain.

The US House of Representatives has backed a Democratic-led resolution aiming to stop the US war on Iran until the conflict is authorized by Congress. The House voted 215 to 208, with four Republicans joining Democrats in favor of ‌the War Powers Resolution.

Israel’s attacks on southern Lebanon and near the capital Beirut killed at least nine people on Wednesday, with Israeli strikes reported on at least 10 vehicles, including an ambulance which left two Lebanese paramedics dead.

Death toll rises to 8 after overnight Israeli air strikes on Gaza City

We have been reporting on the Israeli air strikes that targeted residential apartments in Gaza City overnight.

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are now reporting that the death toll from those strikes has risen to eight, according to sources at Al-Shifa Hospital.

New glasses change Gaza child’s life

Palestinian child Ayoub Junaid broke his specialized medical glasses after a fall in war-torn Gaza. When a video of the seven-year-old, distraught over breaking his glasses, went viral, he received a replacement pair, thanks to a fundraiser and help from a Gaza influencer.

Ayoub’s mother says he can “finally see the world clearly again” but he still needs surgery and urgent medical care, which he can’t get under the continuing Israeli blockade of the Palestinian territory.

Israel-Lebanon agreement in US asserts respect for ceasefire already in place

The statement issued by the State Department not long ago (states that), as a result of the US-led negotiations, Israel and Lebanon agreed to the implementation of a ceasefire. The ceasefire is contingent on the complete cessation of Hezbollah fire and the evacuation of all Hezbollah operatives from the south of the Litani sector.

This is not the announcement of a brand new ceasefire; this is asserting respect for a ceasefire that was actually agreed just last month in May, which was a 45-day extension to an already existing ceasefire that was there before.

Perhaps one of the most notable elements is the establishment of these so-called pilot zones, where the Lebanese armed forces would assume, essentially, exclusive control, not allowing the presence of any non-state actors.

We did know ahead of this latest round of talks that there was a lot of optimism from US diplomats, even earlier in the day.

On Wednesday, we had signaling from a State Department official, saying that there was a slow start, kind of a slow burn in the talks during the course of Wednesday, but that a lot was accomplished. (Al Jazeera)
