Hyderabad, August 24 (PMI): The Telangana Legislative Assembly is set to convene from September 7, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy informed MLAs during a meeting at the Secretariat on Monday, August 24.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister reviewed development programmes in various Assembly constituencies and directed legislators to expedite pending land acquisition for irrigation projects.

Reddy said delays in land acquisition could prevent projects from being completed. He assured MLAs that the government would provide funds for land acquisition, relief and rehabilitation, as well as obtaining necessary forest clearances. He also urged legislators to give greater attention to constituency-level development works.

Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, Ministers N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Tummala Nageswara Rao, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Seethakka, besides several MPs and MLAs, attended the meeting.

Resolution to Reduce Minimum Age for Contesting Elections

Although the government has not officially announced the duration or detailed agenda of the Assembly session, it is likely to consider a resolution seeking to reduce the minimum age for contesting Assembly and Lok Sabha elections from 25 to 21 years.

The resolution, if passed, would be forwarded to the Centre for consideration and possible introduction of an amendment Bill in Parliament.

The Chief Minister had earlier advocated lowering the minimum age for contesting elections to encourage greater participation of young people in legislative bodies. He proposed that candidates should be eligible to contest Assembly and Lok Sabha elections at the age of 21, while the minimum age for contesting Rajya Sabha elections should remain 25.

Reddy has argued that greater representation of young people is necessary to ensure that their views and concerns are reflected in the Legislative Assembly, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The Chief Minister had previously announced plans to convene a special session of the State Legislative Council and Assembly in the first week of August to pass a resolution on reducing the minimum age for contesting Assembly elections. However, the proposal was subsequently deferred.

The September 7 session is therefore expected to provide the government an opportunity to revive the proposal and formally take it forward. (pressmediaofindia.com)
