Israel’s expanding invasion of Lebanon draws global alarm

04-06-2026

JERUSALEM/ BEIRUT/ TEHRAN: Israel’s expanding invasion of Lebanon draws global condemnation, with France requesting an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

US President Donald Trump says he is close to a “very good deal” with Iran, with US media reporting that he is pushing for tougher terms.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the exchange of messages with the US is ongoing but that nothing is certain until a deal is finalized.

Iran has restored gas production at three offshore platforms in the South Pars gasfield after Israel attacked the facility in March.

Israeli forces have carried out several strikes on cities and towns across southern Lebanon in recent hours. In Tyre, at least three air strikes hit the city centre, while Deir al-Zahrani to the north was also struck.

According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, those strikes killed at least eight people and wounded 19, including women and children.

To the east, Israeli forces have launched multiple attacks on villages and towns, as well as a major incursion towards the symbolic Beaufort Castle, known in Lebanon as al-Shaqif, which is a strategic hilltop fortress overlooking the Litani River.

Well-informed diplomatic sources say these incursions are complicating the situation and hurting the possibility of reaching any kind of solution for the conflict in Lebanon. They also say that the Lebanese issue is the main hurdle in the Lebanese-American talks.

Meanwhile, the plight of the internally displaced people is growing by the day, and the Lebanese government is struggling to cope. The crisis could deepen further after the Israeli military issued warnings to more than 80,000 residents of Tyre to flee their homes and head northward.

This will add more and more pressure on the Lebanese government, which already lacks the resources and is suffering from very weak infrastructure.

Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon has expanded dramatically, with Israeli forces now operating past the Litani River.

The expansion marks Israel’s deepest incursion into Lebanon since its withdrawal in 2000.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered his military to push further into Lebanon after Israeli forces made their deepest incursion into the country in more than 25 years.

France has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council as global condemnation of the invasion grows.

Israeli forces have carried out new incursions into southern Syria, entering parts of Quneitra and Deraa provinces, setting up temporary checkpoints, and searching civilians and vehicles, before withdrawing.

The US president has disputed CNN’s coverage of his draft agreement with Iran, saying the network had incorrectly reported that the deal made no mention of Tehran’s nuclear program.

“Fake News CNN said today, routinely, that my Iran Nuclear Deal doesn’t talk about Nuclear, when actually it states, very clearly, that Iran will not have a Nuclear Weapon,” Trump wrote on a post on Truth Social. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
