Suburban Residents to Face Increased Property Tax Burden

Hyderabad, 18 April (PMI): Authorities in Medchal–Malkajgiri district are intensifying efforts to reassess property taxes. Assessment surveys in merged municipalities and newly formed circles are expected to be completed by the end of this month, likely increasing the tax burden on residents.

As part of revenue enhancement plans for the 2026–27 financial year, the Town Planning department has initiated measures to identify buildings that are currently outside the tax net and bring them under property tax assessment. Special focus is being placed on unauthorized multi-storey buildings and commercial complexes.

In municipalities such as Yapral (Ellampet), Aliabad, and Muduchintalapally, along with newly created circles, municipal commissioners, deputy commissioners, and staff are conducting extensive surveys of residential, commercial, and multi-storey buildings. Officials stated that several unauthorized constructions have already been identified.

Discrepancies between official records and actual constructions have prompted a detailed verification process. It has been found that many buildings have more floors than originally approved, which were not recorded earlier. Authorities are currently preparing a list of such properties.

If a building is confirmed to be unauthorized, officials plan to examine construction timelines and levy property taxes retrospectively from the time of construction. This move is expected to significantly increase the financial burden on suburban residents. (pressmediaofindia.com)
