Kolkata, Sept 4 (PMI) A private missionary school in Kolkata has suspended a teacher following allegations that she repeatedly removed a sandalwood mark (tilak) from the forehead of a young student, an education department official said on Friday, September 4.
The matter came to the attention of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari after a video related to the incident went viral on social media, triggering a debate over religious expression and freedom in educational institutions.
Following the allegations, the school administration examined the matter and initiated action against the teacher, according to the official.
In a separate development, Adhikari announced the suspension of an education department employee who was allegedly accused of posting objectionable remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media.
Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Adhikari said derogatory remarks by government employees against the Prime Minister or anyone holding a constitutional position would not be tolerated.
