TEHRAN/ WASHINGTON/ MANAMA: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it attacked “enemy bases in the region”, hitting them with “aerospace missiles”, in a statement carried by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
Kuwait said its air defences intercepted missile and drone attacks while air raid sirens were activated in Bahrain.
Earlier, the United States military said it shot down four Iranian drones launched towards the Strait of Hormuz and struck “Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites” on Qeshm Island and Goruk on Iran’s southern coast.
Iran’s navy had reported firing “warning shots” on Friday at US forces in the Gulf of Oman, saying US ships were harassing vessels in the area. The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) denied the report.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said a paramedic was among five people killed in Israeli attacks on Zebdin in southern Lebanon on Friday, with at least a dozen people killed across the country by Israel’s bombardments despite a new ceasefire deal agreed with Lebanese officials.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said the death toll from Israeli attacks on the country since March 2 has risen to 3,558 people, as well as 10,870 injured.
Israeli forces shot and killed a seven-month-old Palestinian infant and injured the child’s parents after opening fire on a car in the occupied West Bank. Hamas said the killing revealed Israel’s “contempt for the lives” of Palestinians.
Israeli settlers attack Palestinian village in northern West Bank
Israeli settlers have reportedly attacked the Palestinian village of Atuf in the north of the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian news agency Wafa, citing a local official, reported that seven Palestinians were detained by Israeli forces providing support to the settlers.
Wafa said the whereabouts of the detainees remain unknown.
Incidents of settler violence and the harsh treatment of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank by occupying Israeli forces are frequently raised by Palestinian and international rights groups.
Iran’s IRGC says ‘enemy bases in the region’ attacked
Iran’s IRGC has said that it attacked “enemy bases in the region”, hitting them with “aerospace missiles”, in a statement carried by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.
The IRGC said the attacks were in response to US army aggression against the Iranian city of Sirik and Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
IRGC under pressure to ‘deliver results’ as key power in Iran
Alex Vatanka, an expert on Iran, has told Al Jazeera that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) are now the key power broker in the country, rather than the president and broader civilian leadership, and there is increasing pressure on them to deliver results.
“Now, nobody thinks President (Masoud) Pezeshkian really calls the shots,” Vatanka told Al Jazeera earlier.
“Everyone is looking to the Revolutionary Guards leadership, to some extent (Supreme Leader) Mojtaba Khamenei, to the extent he is capable of making decisions,” Vatanka said.
“So you can no longer limit yourself to slogans,” he said of the IRGC.
“You have to deliver the goods and services to your people because if you don’t, we’ve seen in recent months and recent years, the people of Iran will come back to the streets, when their basic needs are not being met by the political class that rule the country,” he said. (Int’l News Desk)
