Police have arrested two cyber criminals from Nalgonda district who posed as police officers over the phone, threatened gold traders with “digital arrest”, and illegally collected money.
WARANGAL, Sept 21 (PMI) Kesamudram police have arrested two men from Nalgonda district for allegedly posing as police officers and threatening gold traders with “digital arrest” to extort money. Mahabubabad district SP Dr. Shabarish, IPS, said police seized a police uniform and a mobile phone from the accused.
The accused were identified as Sheikh Irfan (29) of Nidamanuru and Chintalacheruvu Prashanth (26). According to police, Irfan used a photograph of himself in police uniform as his WhatsApp and Truecaller display picture. He allegedly obtained the phone number of gold trader Bogogu Venugopal Chari through Google and contacted him on September 10.
Claiming to be an SI from Parvathipuram police station near Vikarabad, Irfan allegedly accused the trader of purchasing stolen gold and threatened arrest. He reportedly sent a QR code through WhatsApp and obtained ₹88,026.
Police said technical evidence, cybercrime portal information and bank transaction details helped trace the accused. The duo were arrested on September 20. Investigators said they allegedly collected around ₹4.20 lakh from gold traders in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh between August 15 and September 15.
Police said similar cases were registered against them in several stations during 2024–25. SP Shabarish urged people not to respond to suspicious calls or transfer money under “digital arrest” threats and advised cyber-fraud victims to immediately contact 1930. (pressmediaofindia. com)
