Hyderabad, Sept 21 (PMI) Tension prevailed at Tank Bund on Monday after members of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi (BGUS) staged a protest against barricading and restrictions on Ganesh idol immersion along the upper Tank Bund stretch.
The incident occurred around 11 am when a large number of BGUS members arrived at Tank Bund and found iron barricades and flex banners installed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Hyderabad City Police.
The banners stated that Ganesh idol immersion was prohibited along the upper Tank Bund stretch. Objecting to the restrictions, the protesters attempted to remove some of the iron barricades fixed to the lake railings, stating that the structures had been installed without prior notice.
Police personnel intervened and prevented the protesters from dismantling the barricades. The BGUS members raised slogans against the GHMC during the protest.
BGUS General Secretary Ravinuthula Shashidhar demanded that authorities permit devotees to immerse Ganesh idols at Tank Bund. He also referred to a Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TGSPCB) report submitted to the High Court, which, according to him, found no contamination during Ganesh idol immersions in Hussain Sagar Lake.
Authorities have imposed restrictions on immersion points as part of arrangements for the Ganesh festival, with officials citing crowd management, traffic regulation and environmental considerations. (pressmediaofindia.com)
