Hyderabad, September 22 (PMI): AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday urged Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to name the proposed Warangal airport after freedom fighter Syed Alauddin Haider, popularly known as Maulvi Alauddin.
Owaisi’s appeal came after Revanth Reddy invited suggestions from the public on September 19 for naming the airport.
In a letter addressed to Revanth Reddy, Owaisi pointed out that the airport site was originally developed in the 1930s during the Nizam’s rule to support Warangal’s industries, including the Azam Jahi Mills.
“I welcome your recent initiative inviting the people of Telangana to suggest a suitable name for the airport. In this regard, I request that the airport be named ‘Maulvi Syed Alauddin Airport’. This would be a tribute to one of the prominent freedom fighters of the erstwhile Warangal district who was associated with Hyderabad’s resistance movement against British rule during the 1857 uprising,” Owaisi said.
Owaisi noted that Alauddin, along with Turrebaz Khan, led the historic resistance against the British Residency in Hyderabad on July 17, 1857. He was subsequently arrested and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail.
He said Alauddin’s contribution represented an important chapter in the history of Hyderabad and the freedom struggle in South India.
Owaisi added that naming the airport after Alauddin would be a fitting tribute to his courage and sacrifice.
Revanth Reddy had said on September 19 that the long-standing dream of having an airport in Warangal was becoming a reality and that the required land had been handed over to the Airports Authority of India.
In a post on ‘X’, Revanth Reddy said he was looking forward to flights operating from the Mamnoor Airport in Warangal, describing it as a new symbol of a developing and well-connected Telangana. He also asked people to suggest a name for the new Warangal airport.
Following the Chief Minister’s appeal, several names were suggested. Film director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, known for films such as Arjun Reddy and Animal, suggested the names “Rudrama International Airport” or “Kakatiya International Airport”, referring to the historical and cultural legacy of the Kakatiya dynasty and Queen Rudrama Devi associated with Warangal.
CPI leader K. Narayana suggested naming the airport after former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, whose ancestral village is located near Warangal.
Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy said on September 19 that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was being prepared for the proposed Warangal airport and that the layout of the airport buildings was in the final stages.
Kishan Reddy also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was likely to perform the Bhoomi Poojan (groundbreaking ceremony) for the airport. (pressmediaofindia.com)
