From Hyderabad(Deccan) to Melbourne: Mehdi Moosavi Establishes “Hussainia Zehra,” A Living Symbol of Karbala’s Message
Melbourne, May 7 (Najaf ali Shoukat– PMI) A devoted and courageous young man, Syed Muhammad Mehdi Moosavi, who hails from Hyderabad, India, has demonstrated his profound love and devotion by constructing a magnificent Ashur Khana in Melbourne, Australia, to promote the memory of Imam Hussain (A.S.) and the message of Karbala. This initiative is not only a reflection of his personal faith but also a message for all humanity that the lesson of Karbala remains alive even today.
His heart is so deeply immersed in the love of Imam Hussain (A.S.) that, despite living in a foreign land, he took it upon himself to keep the spirit of Karbala alive. With this passion, he established this grand center of mourning, named “Hussainia Zehra,” which stands out not only for its beautiful architecture and spiritual atmosphere but also for its noble purpose.
One of the most remarkable aspects of “Hussainia Zehra” is that it is not limited to any particular nation, country, or sect. Rather, it is open to all Shia Muslims from around the world. Regardless of language, culture, or nationality, this center serves as a place for mourning and remembrance of Imam Hussain (A.S.) for everyone alike. It represents unity, brotherhood, and love in a practical sense.
This Ashur Khana is not only a venue for gatherings (majalis), elegy recitations (noha), and mourning rituals, but it has also become an important platform for educating the younger generation about the message of Karbala—truth, patience, sacrifice, and justice. Visitors experience a deeply spiritual environment where they can freely express their devotion.
This remarkable achievement by the young man is a shining example that if one truly loves Imam Hussain (A.S.), then distance, borders, and resources cannot become obstacles. He has proven that Karbala is not just an event of the past, but a living movement that will continue to guide humanity toward truth in every era. Indeed, “Hussainia Zehra” is not merely a building but a living symbol of love for Imam Hussain (A.S.), which will keep the message of Karbala alive on the soil of Melbourne.
“Hussainia Zehra” has been equipped with modern technology so that mourning gatherings and celebratory events can be broadcast live. For this purpose, a state-of-the-art video room has been established, along with a high-quality audio system that provides excellent sound for attendees. Through these facilities, devotees of the Ahlul Bayt (A.S.) around the world benefit from these spiritual programs.
Every Thursday night after Isha prayers, regular religious gatherings and acts of worship are held here, where believers participate with great devotion and respect. These spiritual gatherings not only serve as acts of worship but also strengthen the connection with the teachings of the Holy Ahlul Bayt (A.S.).
The love and devotion for the family of the Prophet (PBUH) is evident in “Hussainia Zehra,” where joyous celebrations are held with great reverence on the birth anniversaries of the Ahlul Bayt (A.S.), while mourning gatherings are organized on their days of martyrdom. In these events, the remembrance of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his family fills the atmosphere, and devotees express their heartfelt emotions of love and reverence.
Today, this Ashur Khana has become a center of love for the Ahlul Bayt (A.S.), unity among believers, and religious and spiritual awareness in Melbourne.
With the arrival of the month of Muharram, the atmosphere of Hussainia Zehra transforms into one of deep mourning and devotion. A special feature of this blessed month is that sacred standards (Alam) are installed during the first ten days, reminding people of Imam Hussain (A.S.) and the standard-bearer of Karbala, Hazrat Abbas (A.S.). Devotees respectfully visit these symbols and present their offerings and vows.
The night of Ashura presents a deeply emotional and spiritual scene, where gatherings and mourning continue throughout the night. Speakers narrate the tragedies of Karbala, and mourners, with tearful eyes, remember the suffering of Imam Hussain (A.S.) and offer their condolences.
On the day of Ashura—the day of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S.)—special mourning ceremonies are held at Hussainia Zehra. On this occasion, mourners perform the rituals of Ashura with great reverence, engage in elegies and lamentation, and pay tribute to the martyrs of Karbala.
Thus, the days of Muharram at Hussainia Zehra are not only a symbol of grief and sorrow but also a powerful reminder of patience, sacrifice, and standing firm for truth.
Mehdi Moosavi stated that this Azakhana is spread over an area of approximately 1,500 square meters. A separate hall has been established for women, and the ladies’ section has been made more spacious. The reason for this is that many women attend along with their children, so special arrangements have been made to ensure their comfort and convenience.
The founder of the Ashur Khana, Hussainia Zehra, Mehdi Moosavi, further explained that the construction of this magnificent “Qasr-e-Hussain” was completed in just 35 days. About two years ago, it was formally inaugurated on the day of Eid al-Ghadeer.
Responding to a question, he mentioned that apart from religious gatherings and celebrations, Hussainia Zehra also provides facilities for nikah (marriage ceremonies) and weddings, which the ( Momineen) believers are benefiting from extensively. According to Mehdi Moosavi, more than 150 religious events are held here annually. During the holy month of Ramadan, special arrangements are made daily for iftar along with meals. He further clarified that iftar is hosted by him for 4 days, while for the remaining 26 days it is arranged with the cooperation of the community members.
While describing the significance of the night of Ashura, he said that just as in Hyderabad Deccan, mourning groups and processions move around Ashur Khanas and Imam Bargahs while performing noha recitation and matam (chest beating), similarly here too, mourning groups from different countries participate, presenting their condolences and continuing the rituals of عزاداری (mourning) with great devotion.
The writer also felt it was important to introduce Mehdi Moosavi to the community.
Khādim-e-Aza (servant of mourning), Mehdi Moosavi, belongs to a family from Hyderabad that is deeply rooted in religious and scholarly traditions. He has inherited the art of noha recitation and poetry from his family. He is also the founder of the mourning group “Guroh-e-Shaida e Shabbir (A.S.)” in Melbourne (Australia).
His great-grandfather, Janab Fazil Moosavi, was among the well-known poets of India and Pakistan. His famous qaseeda, “Khuda ka Wali Mola Ali,” is widely recited in gatherings celebrating the birth of Imam Ali (A.S.), who was born in the Kaaba.
His uncle, Raza Moosavi, is also counted among the senior poets of Hyderabad Deccan. Meanwhile, his respected father, Syed Muhammad Hashim Moosavi, is not only a noha reciter but also among the founders of the renowned mourning organization “Guroh-e-Shaida e Shabbir (A.S.)” in Hyderabad Deccan.
His respected mother and sister are also honored with the art of marsiya and noha recitation, and they are actively continuing this tradition in Melbourne as well. (pressmediaofindia.com)
