Promises and reality reconstruction and the future of Gaza
Reconstruction and the future of Gaza
A media’s special coverage, “Gaza: Promises and Reality,” examines the gap between commitments made under the US-brokered ceasefire and the reality Palestinians face on the ground in Gaza.
Over five days, the series explores how Israel’s war on Gaza which has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians, including at least 20,000 children continues to reshape every aspect of life.
Human development has been set back by 77 years with life expectancy plummeting to just 40 years.
Most Israelis want an independent probe into October 7 attack
Polls conducted in October 2025 show three-out-of-four Israelis want to see an independent, state-led investigation into the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack.
This is because there’s a lot of anxiety among Israelis that a similar scenario could take place again, either originating from Gaza or other areas.
While certain security agencies have conducted different probes, people still want to see accountability something Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly blocked.
Why? Because he says any probe would be “biased”. Netanyahu has been saying the judiciary is against him and the results of such a national probe would not benefit him.
He’s also argued that Israel should only probe the circumstances of the October 7 attack after Israel’s wars in the region have ended. As we’ve been seeing, Netanyahu has been pushing for one war after another.
All of Netanyahu’s opponents are going to try to use this moment to lobby against him to secure votes for themselves as they continue to ask for a national probe.
India to send foreign minister, governor to Iran for Khamenei’s funeral
India will send its minister of state for foreign affairs, Shri Pabitra Margherita, and Syed Ata Hasnain, governor of Bihar state, to Iran on Friday for the funeral of slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
“The high-level representation in the ceremony underscores the importance of civilisational ties, including people-to-people connection, between the two countries, providing a robust foundation to political and economic engagements,” an External Affairs Ministry statement said.
Ceremonies and funeral processions for Khamenei will begin on Saturday in Tehran and conclude on July 9 with his burial in his hometown, Mashhad.
In February 2025, Ali stood outside his house in Naqoura, in southern Lebanon, and pointed at the crack in the foundation and fruit trees pulled up by the Israeli military.
The Israeli military had recently withdrawn from the town as part of a ceasefire agreement, but had left behind detonated homes, a graffiti-laden school, and power lines pulled out of the ground. Ali, an elderly man from the town, said at the time he’d fix it all. (Int’l News Desk)
