Hyderabad, Sept 22 (Shoukat-PMI): Cyberabad Police have detained a 33-year-old man under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act for allegedly cheating women by posing as a wealthy Non-Resident Indian (NRI) on matrimonial websites.
The suspect, M. Venkata Kameshu alias Karthik Reddy, a B.Tech graduate from Andhra Pradesh, has been linked by police to 19 cheating cases registered since 2021.
According to police, the accused allegedly created fake profiles on matrimonial platforms and portrayed himself as a well-settled NRI. He reportedly established contact with women through matrimonial websites, WhatsApp and Instagram before allegedly gaining their confidence by promising marriage.
Police alleged that after developing relationships with the victims, he sought money by citing various emergencies and other reasons.
Investigators further alleged that he obtained victims’ bank account details, credit card information and one-time passwords (OTPs), which were allegedly used for unauthorised transactions and online betting activities.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner D R M. Ramesh IPS invoked the PD Act and ordered his detention at Central Prison, Cherlapalli, stating that the preventive action was intended to prevent further alleged offences.
The allegations are subject to investigation and legal proceedings, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court. (pressmediaofindia.com)
