Hyderabad, July 20 (PMI): The management of the historic Chilkur Balaji Temple will organise the traditional Varuna Japam, a Vedic ritual performed to invoke timely and abundant monsoon rains, at Osmansagar (Gandipet Lake) on Tuesday, July 21, from 8:30 am to 11:00 am.
The sacred ceremony will take place at the Osmansagar reservoir, located near the temple on the outskirts of Hyderabad. During the ritual, Vedic scholars and temple priests, led by C. S. Lakshmi Narasimhan, will stand in waist-deep water while offering special prayers and chanting ancient Vedic mantras dedicated to Lord Varuna, the Hindu deity of water and oceans, and Lord Indra, the god of rain.
The Ritwiks, under the guidance of Dr. V. Srirama Ghanapati of Vedabhavanam, will recite the Varuna Japam from the Taittiriya Samhita of the Vedas. As part of the centuries-old tradition, the sacred mantras will be chanted 108 times, seeking divine blessings for widespread rainfall and a favourable monsoon season.
According to the temple management, the annual ritual is performed for the welfare of society and the environment. The prayers seek abundant rainfall to revive agriculture, protect crops from drought, and replenish rivers, lakes, and reservoirs across Telangana.
A temple spokesperson said the Varuna Japam has been conducted as a traditional Vedic practice for many years, reflecting the belief that collective prayers and Vedic rituals contribute to harmony between nature and humanity. Devotees and members of the public are expected to participate in the ceremony and pray for a prosperous agricultural season and sufficient water resources for the state.
