Deal to end war a ‘declaration of US defeat’: Iran

27-06-2026

TEHRAN: Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf says deal to end the war with US was not the result of pressure and coercion.

Israel’s army says it attacked Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon.

Israel’s defence minister Israel Katz says military will not withdraw from Lebanon, even if US demands it.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Iran will not be able to charge tolls in the Strait of Hormuz when a final deal is agreed on.

People returning to homes in southern Lebanon amid ‘deep distrust’

People here are always a little uncertain about the ceasefire, and they have learned that, unfortunately, from brutal experience. In the last couple of days, a large number of people have returned.

I was in a village called al-Abbasieh earlier this morning and the local mayor told us that 80 percent of residents have come back in the last couple of days. That is an enormous number of people, and they are returning to villages and towns where it is relatively safe.

In al-Abbasieh, for example, there is water, electricity and some local medical services. That is not the case for many other towns and villages. What people are still doing is going during the day to fix things up, then returning to shelters or to relatives’ houses in cities like Tyre, and further north in Sidon.

Some are driving as far as Beirut and back every single day and that is because, while there is still some hope, there is also a deep feeling of distrust.

Netanyahu reaffirms pledge to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapon

Speaking at the Muni Expo local government conference in Tel Aviv, the Israeli prime minister said Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon would pose an existential danger to Israel and vowed that his government is determined to prevent that from happening. He said Israel has carried out numerous operations inside Iran and is actively working to stop Tehran from becoming a nuclear-armed state.

Israel and the US have claimed for years that Iran is close to building nuclear weapons, without offering any meaningful proof.

Addressing tensions on Israel’s northern border, Netanyahu said Israel’s military objectives in Lebanon are not yet complete.

He added that Israel is in the process of creating a security buffer zone in southern Lebanon aimed at preventing Hezbollah from staging attacks across the border.

Israeli artillery shelling reported in Lebanon’s Bint Jbeil area

The Israeli military has targeted the outskirts of the town of Yater with artillery shells, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency is reporting.

Rubio trying to convince Gulf nations that US remains ‘reliable partner’

That’s because the US-Israeli war on Iran has demonstrated that US military defence systems “can be taken out by relatively cheap Iranian drones”, says Patrick Bury, a defence and security specialist at the University of Bath in the UK.

“I think if you’re a Gulf leader, (you’re thinking about) militarization on your own terms rather than relying so much on the Americans as in the past,” Bury told media.

Iran fired drones and missiles throughout the war at what it said were US military targets across the Gulf region, prompting widespread condemnation.

Attacks by Iraqi armed group’s also major concern in Gulf

They want peace and stability. The Gulf countries have serious security concerns. They felt betrayed when Iran attacked them.

They also had concerns when it came to armed groups in Iraq that are affiliated with Iran. When I was covering Kuwait, they were talking about a lot of these attacks coming from those armed groups.

In the Gulf, security is the main issue to keep the guns silent. (Int’l News Desk)
