Telangana to airlift its students from Manipur

Hyderabad, May 7 (Zahid Hussain-  PMI): A special cell was established to monitor the situation in the strife-torn Manipur State to protect Telangana students. “Chief secretary  A Santhi Kumari and DGP Anjani Kumar IPS  are in touch with the Manipur government officials to ensure safety of Telangana students and workers,” an official said.

Senior police officials said keeping in view of the growing unrest in Manipur, the helpline was arranged. Soon after the helpline became active, cops received 20 phone calls within an hour. Telangana students studying in National Institute of Technology and Central Agriculture University in Imphal dialled the helpline and sought help, police said.

“If any person from Telangana contacts us, we will share the information with Army and Manipur State police and facilitate his/her transportation to a safe place. Depending on the situation, arrangements will also be made for their travel to Telangana,” Deputy Inspector General of police Sumathi said. The Telangana students and workers employed in various project sites by contractors were safe. “News of arson at places close to where they are staying has left them worried. Some of them called us, requesting us to arrange food for them,” she said.

Police said there are several students from both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, who are pursuing higher education in Manipur. There are also labourers and other workers engaged by contractors in Manipur in various locations, police said. Those affected may call Telangana Helpline No:7901643283 and email dgp@tspolice.gov.in.
