Experts Call for Stronger Action as Telangana Emerges Second in Women’s Crime Rate
Hyderabad, Nov. 2 (Shawer Fatima-PMI): Telangana has recorded the second-highest crime rate against women in India in 2023, according to the latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The state reported 124.9 cases per lakh female population, ranking just below Delhi and ahead of Rajasthan, Odisha, Haryana, and Kerala.
A total of 23,678 cases of crimes against women were registered in Telangana during 2023 — a 7% increase from 22,066 in 2022 and 20,865 in 2021. The state’s charge-sheeting rate stood at 88.1%, notably higher than the national average of 77.6%.
In Hyderabad, the upward trend was even sharper, with 3,822 cases reported in 2023 — a 21.5% rise from 3,145 in 2022.
Major Categories of Crimes
The majority of cases were linked to cruelty by husband or relatives, totaling 10,518 incidents, followed by assault to outrage modesty with 5,024 cases affecting 5,403 victims.
In Hyderabad alone, there were 1,743 cases of domestic cruelty and 751 assaults on women, ranking the city third among metros after Delhi and Mumbai.
Telangana also recorded 3,128 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, including rape, assault, and harassment of minors — 508 of these cases were reported in Hyderabad.
Rape, Abduction, and Cybercrimes
The state reported 817 rape cases in 2023, with most victims aged above 30. Fourteen of these cases involved murder coupled with rape or gang rape, representing 6% of the 233 such cases nationwide.
Additionally, 2,152 cases of kidnapping and abduction of women were registered, some linked to murder.
Telangana ranked sixth in India for child pornography cases (74 incidents), while Hyderabad topped all metropolitan cities with 15 such cases.
Cybercrimes against women — including blackmail, morphing, defamation, and publication of explicit content — stood at 120 cases.
Judicial and Investigative Data
Of the total cases, 6,693 were pending investigation, 1,071 were found false, and 1,320 were classified as civil or mistaken disputes.
Around 19,891 cases were sent for trial, while 68,332 remained pending before courts. Telangana also topped the country in compromised cases, with 9,526 such instances recorded last year.
Expert Observations
Experts note that the steady rise in reported cases reflects greater awareness, improved policing, and easier access to reporting mechanisms.
However, the persistence of domestic violence and sexual offenses highlights the urgent need for stronger preventive, legal, and rehabilitation measures for women’s safety and empowerment.
