Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar also confirmed that the injured suspect is Omar, a notorious history-sheeter involved in several theft and snatching cases
Hyderabad, October 25(Shoukat-PMI) A dramatic confrontation unfolded in Hyderabad on Saturday when South East Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) S. Chaitanya Kumar was allegedly attacked by a history-sheeter during an operation to nab a mobile phone thief in Chaderghat.
The incident occurred near the Victoria Playground, when DCP Chaitanya, accompanied by his
escort team, was on his way to the office after attending a meeting with Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar at Banjara Hills. According to police, the DCP spotted a man snatching a mobile phone from a pedestrian and immediately directed his team to intercept him.
Attack on DCP and Gunman
As the officers moved in to apprehend the suspect, the accused, later identified as Mohammed Omar Ansari (32), reportedly pulled out a knife and launched a violent attack on the DCP and his Personal Security Officer (PSO). In the ensuing scuffle, both officers sustained injuries.
In self-defense, DCP Chaitanya fired two rounds from his service weapon, one bullet hitting Ansari on his hand and another in the abdominal region. Despite being injured, Ansari managed to flee from the spot and took shelter in a nearby residential building before jumping into the playground to evade capture.
Locals Help Police Track Down Accused
Alerted by the commotion, local residents noticed the injured man trying to escape and immediately informed the police. With their assistance, the police team managed to corner and apprehend Ansari. He was subsequently shifted to a hospital in Nampally, where he is currently under treatment under tight police security.
Meanwhile, one of Ansari’s alleged associates escaped from the scene, prompting police to launch a massive manhunt to trace him. The area around the Victoria Playground was cordoned off as forensic teams collected evidence and reconstructed the sequence of events.
Commissioner Sajjanar Confirms DCP’s Safety
Addressing reporters at the scene, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said that DCP Chaitanya was out of danger and recovering. “Our officer acted bravely and in self-defense. The accused attacked with a knife, injuring both the DCP and the PSO. In retaliation, two rounds were fired, which hit the accused on his hand and abdomen,” he stated.
The Commissioner added that the injured PSO was admitted to the hospital with injuries on his neck, stomach, and legs, and is under observation.
Accused Has a History of Serious Crimes
Commissioner Sajjanar revealed that the accused, Mohammed Omar Ansari, is a notorious rowdy-sheeter from the Kamathipura area and has been involved in nearly 20 criminal cases, including theft, extortion, and possession of illegal weapons.
“The Preventive Detention (PD) Act has been invoked against him twice earlier. He had spent about two years in jail and continued to engage in criminal activities even after his release,” Sajjanar said.
The Commissioner further warned that attacks on police officers will not be tolerated, stating, “If anyone dares to attack the police, they must be prepared to face the consequences. Our personnel are trained to respond firmly. Public safety remains our highest priority.”
Investigation Underway
The Chaderghat Police have registered a case and initiated an in-depth investigation into the incident. The crime scene will be reconstructed to determine the precise sequence of events, and additional teams are working to identify and arrest Ansari’s accomplice.
Senior officials, including Additional Commissioners and Task Force teams, visited the spot to supervise the investigation.
Police sources indicated that a special team has been formed to check Ansari’s connections with other offenders and to verify whether he was involved in recent mobile-snatching or extortion cases reported in the city.
As of Saturday evening, DCP Chaitanya and his injured PSO were reported to be stable and recovering, while the accused remains under police custody at the hospital.(pressmediaofindia.com)
