GAZA STRIP: Gaza Water Authority crews continue urgent relief operations to provide water to Palestinians returning to their homes in the southern city of Khan Yunis.
The Authority said in a statement, said its technical teams are distributing limited quantities of water via tankers as part of an emergency response plan aimed at meeting the basic needs of residents after the massive destruction of water networks led to a complete interruption of drinking water in the city.
It also affirmed that its efforts continue in cooperation with international organizations, despite significant field challenges and a lack of equipment and technical resources. It noted that the priority at this stage is to ensure access to safe and usable water.
The Water Authority called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to provide the necessary support to accelerate the rehabilitation of water infrastructure in Khan Yunis and other affected areas in the Gaza Strip, warning of a worsening humanitarian crisis if the water shortage continues.
However, despite a shaky ceasefire, at least three Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks today, according to medical sources speaking to media.
An Israeli government agency says the opening of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt for the movement of people will continue to be delayed.
Israel’s defence minister tells the military to prepare a “comprehensive plan” to defeat Hamas should the Gaza ceasefire collapse.
Hamas returns the remains of two more Israeli captives but admits that it will need specialized equipment and assistance to locate bodies still buried beneath the rubble.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 67,967 people and wounded 170,179 since October 2023. A total of 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023 attacks and about 200 were taken captive.
The bodies of 29 people killed in Israeli attacks have arrived at the enclave’s hospitals in the last 24 hours, the ministry says.
This includes 22 recovered bodies, three who succumbed to their wounds, and four people killed in new Israeli attacks in the past day. This brings the total number of people killed by Israel since October 7, 2023 to 67,967 and the total wounded to 170,179, the ministry said.
Israel has killed at least 23 people since the start of the ceasefire just days ago, the ministry added.
We earlier reported that Israel returned the bodies of 30 Palestinians to Gaza via the Red Cross, bringing the total number handed over to 120. This is now confirmed by the enclave’s Health Ministry and Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.
Under the ceasefire agreement, Israel is to turn over the bodies of 15 Palestinians for every deceased Israeli returned. Earlier today, Hamas handed over two more bodies to Israel and said it had returned all the remains of deceased captives that it could access.
Meanwhile, the Israeli government hasn’t given approval for the entry of heavy equipment machines and other tools needed right now.
Not only are they needed for the search for the missing bodies of thousands of Palestinians under piles of rubble, but we’ve driven around Gaza City for seven days, and we’re seeing sheer volumes of destruction.
Everywhere you go, there is destruction as far as the eye can see. There isn’t a single home that hasn’t been hit, severely damaged, or destroyed. (Int’l News Desk)
