Zero Tolerance to Drunk Driving, Stern Warning to New Year Revellers: CP Sajjanar IPS

Hyderabad, December 23 (Shoukat-PMI): Hyderabad Commissioner of Police Shri V.C. Sajjanar, IPS, on Tuesday issued a stern warning to New Year revellers, stating that crossing legal limits in the name of celebrations would invite stringent action. He announced that special enforcement drives against drunk driving will begin across the city from Wednesday and continue till New Year’s Day.

Addressing a video conference with field-level officers at the Telangana Integrated Command Control Centre (TGICCC) in Banjara Hills, the Commissioner reviewed security arrangements for the upcoming Christmas, Vaikunta Ekadashi, and New Year festivities. He directed officials to put in place a strong security grid to prevent any untoward incidents.

Declaring zero tolerance towards drunk driving, Shri Sajjanar said that on the night of December 31, drunk driving checks will be conducted at 100 locations across Hyderabad. Seven platoons of additional forces will be deployed exclusively for enforcement during the celebrations.

He warned that motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol would face seizure of vehicles, a fine of ₹10,000, and imprisonment of up to six months. Recommendations would also be made for the permanent cancellation of the driving licences of offenders. Partygoers were advised to arrange for designated drivers or use cab services. Strict action will also be taken against youths involved in racing, wheeling, and rash driving.

The Commissioner said that New Year’s Eve celebrations at pubs and hotels of three-star category and above must end by 1 a.m. He emphasized strict compliance with noise pollution norms, warning that sound systems exceeding permissible decibel limits would be seized.

Shri Sajjanar further cautioned that hotel and pub managements would be held fully responsible if ganja or other narcotics are found at their premises, or if obscene dances are permitted. In such cases, licences would be cancelled and criminal cases registered.

To ensure women’s safety, 15 SHE Teams in mufti will be deployed at crowded places, party venues, and major junctions. Any instance of misbehaviour or harassment will result in immediate arrest.

Urging citizens to respect the law, the Commissioner appealed to the public to welcome 2026 safely and responsibly so that the celebrations remain a pleasant memory. He also instructed officers to intensify surveillance at identified hotspots and keep a close watch on the movement of history-sheeters.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes) M. Srinivasulu and DCPs N. Swetha, Rakshita Krishnamurthy, Rupesh, R. Venkateshwarlu, V. Arvind Babu, and Lavanya Naik Jadhav were present at the meeting. (pressmediaofindia.com)
