Bureau Report
MELBOURNE: Victorians aged 16 to 39 are now able to get the Pfizer vaccine with the website to book appointments crashing in the face of high demand.
It comes as Victoria recorded 45 new locally acquired cases over the last 24-hour reporting period to midnight.
Of the 45 local cases, 36 are linked to current outbreaks and 17 have been in quarantine throughout their infectious period.
More than 53,000 tests were conducted during the same period and 31,000 vaccines administered.
Huge demand for Pfizer from 16- to 39-year-olds
As of 7am today, there were 450,000 appointments made available for Victorians in the younger age bracket.
With 1.2 million Victorians in the 16-39 category yet to be vaccinated demand was high and the website went down almost immediately.
With so many eager to get to the jab, there are long queues at the walk-in vaccination hub at St Kilda this morning.
“I am excited and keen and my parents told me last night they are opening up right on 7am – more vaccines mean we can get to school soon,” one young student said from the queue.
Premier Daniel Andrews made the announcement about younger Victorians aged 16 to 39 becoming eligible for the Pfizer vaccine yesterday after it was confirmed a boost in vaccine supply was on its way from Poland.
It comes after Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he wants everyone to be reunited for Christmas and opening up interstate travel is an incentive being looked at for double vaccinated Australians.
