Kovur (Nellore): A six-month-old murder mystery of a Nellore woman was finally cracked by the police when they arrested the culprits on Wednesday. The woman, was identified as Cheedella Jayanthi. She was strangulated to death by her husband’s friend when she resisted his sexual advances. After the crime, the victim’s husband and the accused escaped with gold ornaments on her body.
The incident had occurred in January earlier this year. After several twists and turns, the case was finally cracked on Wednesday.
According to the police, Cheedella Jayanthi, a native of Kattubadipalem village in Buchireddypalem mandal, Nellore district, had fallen in love with a married person — Mastan of Khadarnagar.
Both eloped and got married in Lord Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala on January 7. After a few days, the couple returned to Kattubadipalem village to convince their family members. Angry over the inter-religion marriage, the family members of both the sides did not welcome them. So Jayanthi and Mastan decided to leave the village and live independently.
At that time, Mastan sought help from his close friend Naresh, a native of Nayadupet in the district. Naresh took them to Hyderabad on January 10. From there, three of them reached Shantinagar, on the outskirts of Nirmal district in Telangana.
Clueless over their future, the couple along with Naresh discussed regarding their stay and planned to get work to sustain themselves. Meanwhile, Mastan went out on some work.
Finding Jayanthi alone, Naresh tried to molest her and made sexual advances. When she resisted him, in a fit of rage, Naresh strangulated her to death. When Mastan arrived later, Naresh narrated the incident to him. Confused over the situation, Mastan and Naresh poured pesticide in the victim’s mouth to cover up the murder.
They immediately escaped with the gold jewellery from Jayanthi’s body. The villagers spotted Jayanti and called the police. Subsequently, a case under mysterious death was registered. However, the post-mortem report of Jayanthi had revealed that the victim was in fact murdered.
Meanwhile, Jayanthi’s mother had lodged a missing complaint with the police in March. The police, who pieced together bits and pieces, tracked down Naresh and Mastan. During interrogation, both admitted to the crime.
