Hyderabad: In times of unending paradoxes, technology and superstition are two contradictory forces people live with. In a heart-rending incident, people in a village in Telangana refused to allow the funeral of a woman to be performed only because she died on Amavasya (moonless night) on Saturday.
Stretching their rigidity to extremes, they did not so much as allow the body to be brought into the village. As a result, members of her family had to perform her last rites on the outskirts of the village. The incident occurred at Turkayamjal village in Abdullapurmet mandal of Rangareddy district. Ironically, the village is just 25 kms away from the city.
According to available details, the victim, who was identified as Malathi, was a native of Akuthotapalli in Amangal mandal. She was married to one Mallesh Turkayamjal in 2007. After a decade, the couple was blessed with a baby girl in October this year. However, Malathi developed complications after the delivery, fell sick and had been hospitalised since then. She died on Friday after undergoing treatment. The villagers, who came to know about her death, prevented her family members from bringing the body home as she died on Amavasya. Mallesh and their family members had to comply with the diktat of the villagers and performed Malathi’s last rites on the outskirts of the village.
