LOS ANGELES (Expect surprises at the 97th annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles, with fierce competition in top categories like Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Picture.

The musical Emilia Perez leads the pack with a total of 13 Oscar nominations, while the period drama The Brutalist and the Broadway adaptation Wicked each scored 10.

Controversy, however, has plagued some of the frontrunners, as Emilia Perez contends with the fallout from its star’s hateful social media posts, and The Brutalist faces debate over its use of artificial intelligence.

Comedian and former late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien will emcee the award show for the first time.

Kieran Culkin wins Best Supporting Actor

Kieran Culkin continues his winning streak for his role in A Real Pain, this time with an Oscar.

His is the first Oscar of the night.

The former child actor, now 42, takes home the Best Supporting Actor statuette tonight for his role as Benji Kaplan, a free spirit who clashes with his uptight cousin on a Holocaust remembrance trip.

Culkin, recently seen on the TV series Succession, was the favorite to win in this category. His work in A Real Pain had already won him a British Academy Film Award, a Critics’ Choice Award and a Golden Globe.

Conan thanks labourers who work on films

On a night when glamorous celebrities and the rich and famous are front and centre, Conan takes a moment in his opening dialogue to thank the everyday workers who make films possible.

‘I won’t waste time’, says Conan O’Brien

As he proceeds to waste time on a bonkers musical number, featuring a “sandworm from Dune Two, playing chopsticks on the piano” and a “dancing Deadpool”.

The Oscars have a history of running long, something O’Brien poked fun at.

Conan O’Brien’s opening jokes focuses on Emilia Perez, Wicked

“It’s Hollywood’s biggest night that starts at four in the afternoon.”

Conan O’Brien has started his opening monologue by poking fun at the early start time for tonight’s Oscars, then proceeding to pay tribute to some of the night’s biggest nominees.

“A Real Pain, A Complete Unknown, Nosferatu these are just some of the names I’ve been called on the red carpet,” O’Brien said.

He proceeded to razz one of the biggest films of the year.

“It’s the perfect movie for anyone who’s ever finished watching the Wizard of Oz and wondered, ‘Sure, but where did all the minor characters go to college?’” O’Brien quipped. He also remarked on the amount of swearing in the Best Picture nominee Anora and the scandal sparked by Emilia Perez star Karla Sofia Gascon, after her insensitive social media posts emerged.

“Little fact for you, Anora uses the F-word 479 times. That’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofia Gascon’s publicist,” he said.

Conan O’Brien has poked fun at streaming powerhouse Netflix, which recently upped its cost for subscribers.

“We’re here to celebrate the movie industry. What a year for the movie industry!” O’Brien said. “Netflix leads all studios with an impressive 18 – count ’em –18 price increases.” (Int’l News Desk)
