‘We need peace, not endless war’: Zelenskyy

05-03-2025

LONDON: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says “for peace to be real, we need real security guarantees” after he met European leaders at a summit in London.

Russia says “someone should make (Zelenskyy) want peace” after the fiery blow-up at the White House with US President Donald Trump.

France and the UK have not agreed on a partial truce plan for Ukraine, the British armed forces minister says, after French President Emmanuel Macron said it was proposed by the two nations.

A minerals deal with the United States is “ready” to be signed, Zelenskyy says, despite his public bust-up with Trump.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the US is trying to end the Russia-Ukraine war but that can’t happen “unless both sides come to the table, starting with the Russians”.

Can Europe guarantee Ukraine’s security without the US?

Trump has made it clear the US will not provide security guarantees for Ukraine, urging Europe’s military forces to take charge instead.

In meetings with Trump in Washington, DC last week, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer both indicated a willingness to send troops to Ukraine as peacekeepers if a deal to end Russia’s war is reached but can Europe meaningfully provide a security cover to Ukraine without US backing? What are Europe’s true security capabilities? How dependent is the region on US support? And what threat does Russia pose?

Ukraine to receive British interceptor missiles

Ukraine will receive more than 5,000 Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM) interceptor missiles and associated RapidRanger launchers from the United Kingdom.

The transfer comes after Prime Minister Starmer announced on Sunday the UK would allocate $2bn to boost Kyiv’s defences.

Ukraine’s Defence Ministry said on X the agreement is “one of the largest in Ukraine’s history in the field of security and defence”.

The LMM is a modern British interceptor missile specifically adapted to counter Shahed-type drones.

What is the ‘Danish model’?

The so-called “Danish model” refers to countries directly financing the production of military equipment and weapons in Ukraine.

The Danish Foreign Ministry said last year that following Denmark’s initiative to invest directly in the Ukrainian defence industry, the European Commission had asked the Danish government to lead the effort to use frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s domestic production.

“The Danish model of cooperation is not only solidarity but also determination to support our struggle for freedom and sovereignty,” Dmytro Klimenkov, Ukraine’s deputy defence minister, said in November last year.

Meanwhile, France and Britain have not agreed on a partial truce plan for Ukraine, a UK minister says, after French President Emmanuel Macron said it had been proposed by the two nations.

“No agreement has been made on what a truce looks like,” Defence Minister Luke Pollard told Times Radio. “But we are working with France and European allies for a lasting peace.”

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he spoke with Macron about security guarantees for his country, adding a weak ceasefire with Russia would only serve as a ”prelude” to more Russian aggression against his or other countries in Europe. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
