Washington Post axes X ads amid Musk’s antisemitism row

01-12-2023

WASHINGTON: The Washington Post has joined the growing list of companies suspending advertising on Elon Musk’s Twitter/X platform amid a series of anti-Semitism controversies related to Musk’s online posts.

The decision comes after Musk shared a meme endorsing the debunked “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory, a move that has intensified the ongoing advertiser exodus from Twitter/X.

The newspaper’s tech journalist, Taylor Lorenz, had sought clarification from the Post’s advertising department regarding their continued support for Musk despite the recent stories on rising anti-Semitism. However, the ad department declined to respond.

A Post spokesperson confirmed the decision to halt ad spending on Twitter/X, stating that the pause is effective this week, and ads on Musk’s platform should cease running soon.

The spokesperson did not disclose the exact amount spent on advertising on Twitter/X. CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy, who has been monitoring the trend of companies pulling their ads from Musk’s platform, noted that the fallout is extending beyond advertisers.

Elon Musk, who has been under fire over accusations of antisemitism flourishing on his social media platform X, has visited Israel, where he toured a kibbutz attacked by Hamas militants and held talks with top leaders.

The billionaire met Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who scolded him over content on the platform previously known as Twitter, and joined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a tour of the Kfar Azza kibbutz, a rural village that Hamas militants stormed on October 7 in a deadly assault that launched the war.

Wearing a protective vest and escorted by a phalanx of security personnel as rain fell, Musk used his phone to take photos or videos of the devastation, according to video released by Netanyahu’s office.

Musk’s visit came as Israel and Hamas reached a deal to extend a ceasefire for two more days.

The Tesla chief executive and prime minister visited the damaged homes of victims, including the family of Abigail Edan, a four-year-old girl with dual Israeli-US citizenship who was held hostage by Hamas after her parents were killed.

She was released on Sunday in the latest round of exchanges during a ceasefire in Gaza set to expire after Monday.

“It was jarring to see the scene of the massacre,” Musk said in a conversation with Netanyahu streamed on X.

He said he was troubled by video and photos that the prime minister showed him of the killings of civilians, including children. (Int’l News Desk)
