Hyderabad: Congress MLAs on Monday tore up the copies of Governor ESL Narasimhan’s address to the joint session of Telangana Legislative Assembly and Council.
Soon after the Governor began his address at 10 a.m., Congress members raised protests on the government’s poor response to farmers’ suicides and the crisis in the agriculture sector. They also displayed placards. Senior member Komatireddy Venkat Reddy was seen throwing his headphone towards the Governor. The headphone hit Legislative Council Chairman Swamy Goud in the eye and he was taken to the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital here immediately after the House was adjourned.
Ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) members took serious exception to the Congress member’s ‘rowdyism’ in the House and demanded action against Venkat Reddy. However, Congress leader in the Council Mohammed Shabbir Ali came to the defence of Venkat Reddy. He said the marshals deployed by the government outnumbered the legislators. The Governor, meanwhile, continued his address unfazed by the protests by the Congress members. He listed out the irrigation projects, education reforms and the initiatives undertaken by the government for development of the state and welfare of the people.
Ruckus In Assembly Was Pre-planned: Harish Rao
The ruckus created by the Congress members in the Telangana Assembly was pre-planned, Legislative Affairs minister Harish Rao said. “Video footage of the incident would be reviewed and appropriate action will be initiated against the members,” he said. According to sources, Congress leader Komatireddy Venkat Reddy is likely to face action for injuring Legislative Council Chairman Swamy Goud.
They Attacked Me First: Komatireddy Venkat Reddy
Defending his actions, Congress leader Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said that he was attacked by the Assembly marshals first and he only reacted to it. “The Governor’s speech did not mention the problems faced by farmers. I, along with other Congress members, marched towards the Speaker’s podium to register my protest. However, the marshals blocked our path and resorted to attacks. I was kicked and sustained injuries on my leg,” he said. He also questioned the TRS government’s actions in preventing opposition members from registering their protest. “In Parliament, all the TRS MPs marched towards the Speaker’s podium, while in the state Assembly the party is imposing restrictions,” he added.
TRS Condemns Congress Actions
Members of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) condemned the actions of the Congress party in the Assembly, on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, TRS MLC Karne Prabhakar said the Congress resorted to undemocratic means to protest and tearing the Governor’s speech papers and throwing mikes was a disgraceful act. “Governor Narasimhan was speaking about the welfare programmes implemented by the TRS in the last fours years, and interrupting his speech in this manner is uncalled for,” he said.
Meanwhile, TRS MLA Srinivas Goud said the Congress intentionally created a ruckus in order to come out of the Assembly premises. “If the Congress wanted to question the Governor’s speech or the government’s welfare programmes they will be given time in the Assembly on Tuesday. If they resort to violence and the Governor loses his eyesight, who is responsible,” Srinivas Goud questioned the Congress.
