16-01-2021

ABU DHABI/ DUBAI: A total of 1,041 kg of narcotics worth 1 billion dirhams have been seized in Abu Dhabi in recent months, Abu Dhabi police said on Friday.

Making the announcement on their social media accounts, Abu Dhabi Police said up to 22 members of international drug trafficking gangs of different nationalities had been arrested after being found involved in drug trafficking, including of dissolved methamphetamine. Eight of those arrested were also involved in money laundering operations resulting from the trafficking of illicit drugs.

Police in the capital noted that the 1 billion dirhams drug seizure operations were carried out in the last quarter of 2020, as part of a series of cases closely followed by the anti-narcotics department. in the criminal security sector of the Abu Dhabi police.

As soon as the police received a denunciation, security plans were drawn up to break the network and seize all quantities of narcotics. It was also found that there are important partners for the traffickers in the country and that instructions have been given to them from abroad.

Col. Taher Gharib Al Dhaheri, director of the anti-narcotics directorate, said security plans revealed the existence of several gangs managed from outside the country and operating in several emirates. Each gang had a specific role in smuggling and promoting drugs.

Al Dhaheri added that one of the gangs used a new smuggling tactic to smuggle drugs into the country. They used dissolved crystal methamphetamine, believing they could trick the well-trained and fully alert police in the capital, which helped them arrest traffickers and seize large amounts of drugs.

He noted that extensive investigations also revealed that some members of these gangs were managing the funds resulting from the sale of drugs and their laundering using illegal methods. They were immediately arrested and returned to the appropriate authorities. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
