TS Minorities Welfare Dept engulfed in scams: Congress

Hyderabad,  Congress party on Wednesday demanded high level probe into various scams and irregularities that occurred in the Minorities Welfare Department.

In a representation sent to Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao and Deputy CM Mohammed Mahmood Ali, the Congress leaders alleged that all institutions under Minorities Welfare Department were not functioning properly and they are engulfed in various irregularities and corruption.

Led by Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee (GHCC) Minorities Department chairman Shaik Abdullah Sohail, a delegation comprising of TPCC Spokesperson Syed Nizamuddin, Sajid Shareef, Abdul Sattar and other leaders, submitted a memorandum to Telangana State Minorities Finance Corporation (TSMFC) chairman Syed Akbar Hussain at Haj House on Wednesday.

Speaking to media persons later, he said key departments or institutions like TSMFC, TMERIS and Urdu Academy have turned into dens of corruption and irregularities. “A few officials are managing the affairs as per their whims and fancies and they are misusing the assets and resources for their personal gains. Their lack of commitment in implementing schemes meant for minorities’ welfare has led to large scale irregularities and major scams which consequently hit poor students and jobless youth of Muslim community,” he alleged.

Abdullah Sohail demanded detailed, independent and impartial probe into the functioning of all departments under Minorities Welfare Department. ” The role of MWD Secretary Syed Omer Jaleel in the scholarship scam should be probed. He is directly or indirectly responsible for major irregularities in various departments. He should be transferred immediately to facilitate an impartial enquiry,” he demanded.

The Congress leaders said that the officials were simply rejecting the applications of students without citing any reasons. “We suspect that the list of beneficiaries of scholarships is fictitious and money is being swindled by officials using non-existent beneficiaries. Genuine students of minority communities are not getting the scholarship amount,” he said.

He also alleged that several irregularities have occurred in the Telangana Minorities Residential Educational Institutions Society (TMREIS). The total number of students in TMREIS schools being shown in records is much higher than the actual number of students. Therefore, crores of rupees are being swindled using fictitious number of students. Several irregularities also took place in the purchase of computer systems.

The Congress leader also pointed out that as against the State Government’s order sanctioning 100 sewing machines for each Assembly constituency, about 1,000 machines were sanctioned to Karwan MLA alone. “This leads to major suspicion whether those machines were really purchased and whether they reached the real beneficiaries,” he said.

Abdullah Sohail also demanded that the State Government sanction loans to all eligible applicants who applied under the loan-cum-subsidy scheme. So far, of 153,906 loan applications, only 14,544 have been sanctioned. No fresh applications are being accepted since 2015-16. Therefore, he demanded that the government clear all pending applications and take fresh applications.
