GAZASTRIP: Thousands in Gaza struggle in tents amid cold, stormy weather
Strong winds, rain and winter conditions are worsening the suffering of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, where many families are living in worn-out tents after their homes were destroyed by Israel’s bombardment.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have returned to northern Gaza since a ceasefire took effect last month, pausing Israel’s 15-month assault. However, most have found their homes destroyed or severely damaged.

President Trump has signed an executive order authorising economic and travel sanctions against people who work on International Criminal Court (ICC) investigations of US citizens or US allies, such as Israel.
Egypt has said Trump’s plan to displace millions of Palestinians from Gaza will “incite a return of fighting”, while Jordan has warned it will spread chaos in the Middle East and jeopardise its peace with Israel.
Trump said Israel will hand over Gaza to the US after the fighting is over and the enclave’s population was resettled elsewhere, which he said meant no US troops would be needed on the ground.
Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz has ordered the country’s military to prepare a plan to allow the “voluntary departure” of Gaza’s residents.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed 47,583 people and injured 111,633 others, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry. The Gaza Government Media Office has updated the death toll to at least 61,709 people, saying thousands of people who were missing are now presumed dead. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, and more than 200 were taken captive.
Prime Minister Netanyahu has said it is important to “carefully” consider President Trump’s proposal to displace almost two million Palestinians from Gaza in order to rebuild the destroyed enclave.
“(Trump) raised his idea about Gaza, about the day after Hamas, and I think it is worth listening carefully to this idea, which is the first original idea that has been raised in years,” Netanyahu said in a video statement from his Washington hotel.
Netanyahu continued that Republican and Democrat congressional leaders agreed on two things “Hamas must be eliminated.

The Jenin refugee camp has been rocked by explosions as the Israeli military continues its weeks-long operations there.
Israeli forces have stormed the town of Beit Kahil, north of Hebron, and Jalazone camp in Ramallah and el-Bireh governorate.
Israeli forces also stormed the town of Kafr Nima, west of Ramallah.
The Israeli military has forced Palestinian families out of their homes in Tulkarem and repurposed them as military barracks.
Oil executives remain vigilant as tankers cautiously return to navigating through the Red Sea, following a recent halt in attacks by the Yemen-based Houthis.
One Liberian-flagged oil tanker, which was attacked by the Iran-backed group last year as part of its campaign to disrupt international shipping in protest against Israel’s war on Gaza, sailed through the Red Sea this week, Suez Canal officials said on Monday. (Int’l News Desk)
