Hyderabad Dec 29 (PMI) The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued a warning to the public against fake “Happy New Year” greetings, gifts, and promotional links circulating on WhatsApp and other messaging platforms during the New Year season.
In a press note released on Monday, Shikha Goel, IPS Director, TGCSB, said cybercriminals are exploiting the festive atmosphere by sending fraudulent links disguised as SBI credit card year-end offers, New Year gifts, travel discounts, event tickets, and similar festive deals. These messages often prompt users to click a link to view a greeting, claim an offer, or receive a gift.
The Bureau cautioned that clicking on such links may lead to the silent installation of malicious APK files on mobile phones. Once installed, the malware can gain unauthorized access to OTPs, banking details, contacts, photos, and WhatsApp accounts. This allows fraudsters to impersonate victims and carry out further financial fraud and social engineering scams.
TGCSB further noted that these malicious links are frequently forwarded through trusted contacts and family WhatsApp groups, making them appear genuine and increasing the chances of people falling victim to the scam.
Advising citizens to remain cautious, TGCSB urged the public not to click on greeting, gift, or offer links received via WhatsApp or SMS, and never to install applications or updates shared through messaging platforms. People have also been advised not to share OTPs, PINs, CVV numbers, or verification codes with anyone, and to enable Two-Step Verification on WhatsApp. The Bureau stressed the importance of keeping mobile devices updated only through official app stores.
Citizens who may have clicked on suspicious links have been advised to immediately disconnect their internet connection, uninstall any suspicious applications, secure their accounts, inform their banks if necessary, and report the incident without delay.
Victims of cyber fraud can report incidents by dialing 1930, the national cyber fraud helpline, or by lodging a complaint at www.cybercrime.gov.in. TGCSB said early reporting significantly improves the chances of preventing financial loss.
Reiterating its commitment to safeguarding citizens from emerging cyber threats, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau has appealed to the public to remain vigilant during the festive season. (pressmediaofindia.com)
