Telangana High Court Adjourns Hearing on BC Reservation

The court has not yet stayed the upcoming local body elections.

Hyderabad, Oct 8’Oct 08(PMI) The Telangana High Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing on Backward Classes (BC) reservations in local bodies to Thursday at 2:15 pm. The court, however, has not stayed the election process as the State Election Commission (SEC) has yet to release the official notification for local body elections.

Appearing for the state government, advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the reservation bill was passed unanimously in the Assembly and that the government increased reservations following a comprehensive caste census. He also emphasized that courts generally avoid interfering once the election process begins.

The court questioned the government on whether the “triple test,” as directed by the Supreme Court for granting reservations in local bodies, has been implemented and sought details on how long the reservation bill has been pending with the Governor.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had rejected a writ petition challenging the government’s order increasing BC reservations to 42 percent in local body polls, as two similar petitions were pending before the High Court. Petitioners argue that the total reservations would reach 67 percent—along with 15 percent for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 10 percent for Scheduled Tribes (STs)—exceeding the 50 percent cap set by the Supreme Court.(pressmediaofindia.com)
