Hyderabad, October 5(PMI)The Telangana government is facing legal challenges after a writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court questioning its decision to provide 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies. The move has created uncertainty over both the quota’s implementation and the schedule for upcoming local body elections.
BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Sunday met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy briefed him on the latest developments in the case. The Minister also held consultations with Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, AICC in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan, and TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud to discuss the legal and administrative implications.
The writ petition in the Supreme Court, filed by V. Gopal Reddy from Rajanna Sircilla district, challenges the State’s decision to extend the BC quota to 42 per cent. The case is likely to come up for hearing on Monday.
In addition, two related petitions are pending before the Telangana High Court, which is scheduled to hear them on October 8. With multiple cases before the courts, the State government finds itself in a tight spot as it awaits judicial clarity on the matter.
Officials fear the ongoing litigation could not only impact the implementation of the enhanced BC reservation but also lead to delays in holding local body elections across the State(pressmediaofindia.com).
