Hyderabad, Oct. 20: Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivadhar Reddy on Monday vowed a strict crackdown on criminals following the brutal murder of Constable Empalli Pramod Kumar in Nizamabad.
Constable Pramod, 42, was stabbed to death by a repeat offender, Shaik Riyaz, during an arrest operation related to a bike theft case on October 17. The incident triggered widespread outrage across the police department.
According to officials, Pramod, accompanied by his nephew, went to detain Riyaz. During the ride back to the police station, the accused suddenly attacked Pramod with a knife, killing him on the spot and injuring his nephew. Two of Riyaz’s aides arrived on another bike and helped him escape after attacking a sub-inspector who tried to intervene.
The DGP paid homage to the slain constable and expressed solidarity with his grieving family — wife Praneetha and their three young sons. He announced a ₹1 crore ex-gratia, continuation of the constable’s last drawn salary till retirement, a government job for one family member, 300 square yards of house site, and additional financial aid of ₹24 lakh from the Police Welfare and Security Funds.
Riyaz, who had been absconding since the murder, was captured on Sunday with the help of a local resident named Asif, near Sarangapur under Nizamabad Town VI Police Station limits. Both Riyaz and Asif were injured during the scuffle and admitted to hospital for treatment.
However, on Monday morning, while undergoing treatment at Nizamabad Government General Hospital, Riyaz attempted to escape by snatching a weapon from a police constable and trying to open fire. Police retaliated, and he was killed in the process, according to the DGP’s statement.
DGP Shivadhar Reddy reaffirmed that the Telangana Police will continue to uphold law and order and act decisively against hardened criminals.
“On behalf of the Telangana Police Department, I pay tribute to Constable Pramod Kumar, who laid down his life in the line of duty,” the DGP said. (pressmediaofindia.com)
