Some Nations Flouting Global Norms, UN Reform Urgently Needed: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, October 14(PMI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday expressed concern over certain countries “openly violating” international laws and attempting to reshape global norms to assert dominance in the coming decades.

Addressing a conference of military chiefs from countries contributing to United Nations peacekeeping missions, Singh emphasized the need for a reformed, rules-based international order. While he refrained from naming specific nations, he warned that current global governance structures are inadequate for today’s challenges.

“We cannot fight today’s challenges with outdated multilateral structures. Without comprehensive reforms, the UN faces a crisis of confidence,” Singh said. “For today’s interconnected world, we need a reformed multilateralism.”

Reiterating India’s commitment to upholding international norms, Singh said the country stands firmly in support of global peace and stability. He also made a strong case for the reform of the United Nations and other major multilateral institutions to better reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.

Highlighting India’s significant role in global peacekeeping, the minister noted that nearly 2.9 lakh Indian personnel have served in over 50 UN peacekeeping operations over the decades. He paid tribute to the more than 180 Indian peacekeepers who have lost their lives in service under the UN flag.

“From Congo and Korea to South Sudan and Lebanon, Indian soldiers, police, and medical professionals have stood shoulder to shoulder with the international community to protect the vulnerable and help rebuild war-torn societies,” he added.(pressmediaofindia.com)
