M.A. Saleem, a 1993 batch IPS officer, has been appointed the new Director-General & Inspector-General of Police of Karnataka. He will be the 43nd DG&IGP of the State, and he will have a one year tenure, retiring in June, 2026.

In a notification, the State government stated that Mr. Saleem will replace Alok Mohan, a 1987-batch IPS officer — who retired from service on May 21 — as the head of the police force of Karnataka. He will continue to be the DGP of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Special Units and Economic Offences, Bengaluru, until further orders

Dr. Saleem, who also held the post of Special Commissioner (Traffic), Bengaluru City, in 2022, is best known for his track record of innovative traffic management. Dr. Saleem holds a PhD in traffic management.

Speaking to the media soon after assuming charge, Dr. Saleem said that he would carry forward the work done by his predecessor focussing on transparency in the department and a victim-centric approach.

Police officers tend to focus on crime and investigation, and in the process forget the victims of crime. “There is a need for paradigm shift which needs to be focused,” he said.

Explaining a 12-point programme, he said community participation in Police Department, maintaining law and order to ensure peace and harmony in society, and monitoring of social media to prevent misinformation were among his areas of focus.

He also mentioned the prevention of anti-national and anti-social activities, complete elimination of rowdies and adoption of latest technology to fight cybercrime and traffic problems and decongestion of the city.

“Cyber crime cases represent 12% of the total crime reported. There are some challenges compared to physical crimes which will be addressed with the adoption of latest technology,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Alok Mohan said that the State had the best force in the country and he was proud of leading it and the credit went to all officers who were serving in the department and their families for supporting the cause.(pressmediaofindia, com)
