Search for survivors as Israeli strikes level homes, mosque

05-02-2024

GAZA CITY/ JERUSALEM: Rescue teams search for survivors as local authorities say 30 people were killed in Israeli air attacks on “safe homes” and a mosque in central Gaza.

Health workers, patients and displaced Palestinians trapped inside al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City are “completely terrified”, reports Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum as videos show Israeli snipers killing at least seven Palestinians nearby.

Houthi spokesperson rejected US’s dismissal of a link between the Gaza war and Red Sea attacks, as the US launches more strikes on Yemen.

At least 27,365 people have been killed and 66,630 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The revised death toll in Israel from the October 7 Hamas attacks stands at 1,139.

Israel’s intense bombing campaign has not stopped for the past few days and it is concentrated more in the central area. The Israeli military, within the past few days, withdrew from the area and it has become a major target of relentless air strikes and artillery shelling.

Deir el-Balah, an area that has been largely designated as safe in the initial weeks of the war, has become a site of those relentless air strikes.

Thousands of people who were ordered to leave the northern part of the Gaza city mainly reside here.

The attacks, mainly targeting the western part of the city, have caused a great deal of damage and destruction to multiple homes as well as public facilities.

Almost 30 people were killed in the air strike in the Deir el-Balah city with tens of injuries reported. Many wounded could not be attended to immediately as a result of this situation and could die on the floor of the hospital.

Earlier, Israel has approved a one-year extension of a citizenship law which blocks Palestinians from receiving resident status in Israel if they marry Israeli residents, Haaretz has reported.

The law was introduced in 2002 during the second Intifada commonly referred to by Palestinians as al-Aqsa Intifada with the Israeli cabinet at the time citing security reasons.

It was then extended annually, with a gradual expansion to include residents and nationals of Iraq, Iran, Lebanon and Syria. The law has been condemned by several human rights groups.

Haaretz states that this year’s extension is pending the Knesset’s approval.

Israel’s war on Gaza is now in its 122nd day.

However, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced many millions of people has its roots in a colonial act carried out more than a century ago.

For decades, Western media outlets, academics, military experts and world leaders have described the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as intractable, complicated and deadlocked. (Int’l News Desk)
