REPATRIATION OF STRANDED INDIAN WORKERS IN THE GULF COUNTRIES

Hyderabad April 28:   When Indian is still reeling under the issue of dealing with internal migrant workers, explosive situation is growing for the evacuation of millions of Indian foreign worker stranded in Gulf Nations who are struck without jobs and money due to the lockdown to contain the spread of Corona virus Covid-19.

The Arab Nations has repeatedly asking the countries to take back their citizens who have been terminated or were put on leave apart from those who were on visit visa or short term employment contracts. Other than this there are students, elderly persons, tourist and pilgrims.

These workers cannot go back to their home because unlike many other countries Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has refused to allow the repatriation flights to bring back the stranded workers, students and elderly among others.

But Gvernment should have asked its counter parts which flew empty flights to pick their nationals from India to bring back Indian citizens stranded in those countries.

Going through an Interview of Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, Indian Ambassador to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to a Malayam News Channel where to a question about the plans in action for the repatriation of the Indian as the Embassy is receiving desperate calls from the Indian workers to send them back home, he said “As of now there are no plans for the repatriation flights and the matter will be taken up after the lockdown which ends on May 3. The Indian mission is working 24×7 in lending a helping hand to about 2.6 million strong Indian Community present in Saudi Arabia.”

With the Health Ministries of the Gulf Nations disclosing that 70-80% of the corona virus infected cases in their countries are pertaining to the expatriate community. They have limited medical facilities and thus are seriously urging the countries who worker are stranded to repatriate them to avoid volatile situation in their countries.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said “majority of the foreign workers in the Gulf Nations comes his state and Kerala is really indebted to is expatriates for its development and progress. We will try our best to bring them back. We know they are living in crowded and cramped facilities and are going through distressing times.”

He further said that he had written to Prime Minister Modi twice urging him to repatriate the Stranded Indian Nationals and assured that the people and his Government can take care of the testing and quarantine needs of the returnees in their state.

It is visible from the statements of the Indian missions in the Gulf Countries and silence of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the External Minister Jaishanker on the repatriation that there will be no respite for the stranded Indian workers in the Gulf Countries till the Lockdown is lifted on May 3, 2020. Government of India is managing the delay through prompt help to this nations with the delivery of much needed food supply during the Holy month of Ramadan and also recommitted to supplies of Hydroxychloroquine and Paracetamol essential in fighting for containing the spread of Corona virus Covid-19.

It is relevant for the Modi Government that the Good will that he enjoys with this nations prevail and at the same time the patience of this nations last till the lockdown date of May 3 after which the decision and policy will be taken up for the repatriation of the stranded workers.
