Put an end to sand mafia, file SC/ST case against police excesses, Meira warns TRS govt

Karimnagar, Former Speaker of Lok Sabha Meira Kumar today demanded that the TRS government file an SC/ST Atrocities case against the police besides ending sand mafia in Telangana State.

“Creation of Telangana State during my tenure as Lok Sabha Speaker gave me immense pleasure. But the police torture against Dalits pained me very much. Those who are supposed to protect them encouraged attacks on the Dalits”, she alleged and demanded that the State government withdraw criminal cases against Daliths. She also assured victims of police “brutalities” that Congress would launch a movement till victims got justice.

Meira Kumar, who was in Karimnagar on Monday to console victims of police excesses in Nerella village in Sircilla district, demanded that the State government order a judicial inquiry into the gory incident. Meanwhile, the government deployed huge police force in Sircilla town. Meira Kumar, who will address a public meeting in Sircilla on Monday evening, reached Karimnagar town on Sunday night.

It may be mentioned here that the Congress leaders approached the High Court as the police denied permission for public meeting in Sircilla. The police warned the Congress leaders of severe action if they organized a public meeting and rallies. The police brought additional forces from five neighbouring districtstown heightening tension.

Speaking to the media in the morning, TPCC Chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy alleged that the police were also harassing the victims’ families. He warned that atrocities against Dalits, tribals and BCs will not long last. He said the Congress would not keep quiet if the government harasses Dalits of Nerella village. Uttam also alleged that the sand mafia was in the hands of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s relatives. Uttam alleged that the police administer electric shock to the Nerella Dalits.

Senior leaders including Koppula Raju, K. Jana Reddy, Shabbir Ali, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, T. Jeevan Reddy, Dr. J. Geetha Reddy, V. Hanumantha Rao, Ponnam Prabhakar, Sridhar Babu, and others were also present
