Hyderabad, December 23 (PMI): The Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Zone, Ms. S. Rashmi Perumal, IPS, held a meeting with members of the transgender community at the DCP North Zone office on Tuesday. About 25 transgender persons residing and operating within the North Zone limits attended the meeting.
During the interaction, participants highlighted several issues faced by the transgender community, including a lack of inclusiveness, limited social acceptance, and restricted livelihood opportunities. The meeting also discussed public complaints regarding nuisance and alleged extortion during social functions such as marriages, house-warming ceremonies, and other occasions, where large amounts were reportedly demanded in the guise of blessings, causing inconvenience and apprehension among the public.
Addressing the gathering, the DCP encouraged community members to opt for skill development, learn new trades, take up self-employment, and adopt dignified and lawful means of livelihood. She assured them that genuine grievances would be taken up with the concerned government departments to facilitate support, welfare measures, and rehabilitation initiatives.
The participants pointed out difficulties in identifying local residents and outsiders due to the non-availability of identity cards and sought the issuance of proper identification. Some members also reported that they had not received transgender certificates, which was creating hurdles in accessing government welfare schemes.
The police clarified these issues and advised the participants against resorting to intimidation or extortion in any form. It was cautioned that such practices could erode public goodwill and would invite criminal action as per law.
The meeting concluded with an assurance from the police to continue constructive engagement with the transgender community, promote lawful and sustainable livelihood options, maintain public order, and protect the dignity and rights of all concerned. (pressmediaofindia.com)
