PLIGHT OF THE INLAND AND OVERSEAS INDIAN MIGRANT WORKERS

Hyderabad April 13 (Newslines): When the world is adulating India for its early lockdown strictly implemented throughout the country to contain the spread of corona virus Covid-19, it is struggling to contain the exodus of internal migrant workers who are desperate to return to their home state, district, town or village.

Lakhs of migrant works were seen walking on the National highways in the absence of any means of transportation to reach their homes. In the beginning the Government appealed to these migrant worker to stay where ever they are. When this appeals and advises did not work interstate borders were sealed and state governments were advised to make adequate arrangements of food and shelter for these workers.

With the extension of the Lockdown till April 30, these workers who are staying in the shelters or at the accommodation of their respective factory, Mill or companies are beginning to show signs of frustration. There has been large number of protest and sporadic instances of violence by them.

These are the internal state of the migrant workers but by highlighting this Newslines want to draw the attention of Government of India on the plight of overseas migrant workers. To contain and prevent the spread of Covid-19 Majority of the countries all over the globe have either announced shutdown or implemented total lockdown. The economic activity have come to a grinding halt and have brought huge financial crises in the business houses forcing them to opt for cost cutting for their survival.

In this process there are reports of largescale retrenching and layoff’s all over the world. But for India and the migrant Indian workers in the Gulf States who are being laid off it’s a dual fold bewilderment. Due to the lockdown and the closure of all Airports and Airlines they are forced to stay where ever they are with the indeterminate lockdown they are getting distressed. Without job and salaries their survival in the foreign land is giving them goosebumps.

With the tentative speculations there are about 8-9 million Indian working in the Gulf Countries. Many of the NGO’s working in these countries are deeply worried about the plight of these sacked works. In this scenario Non Resident Indian (NRI) associations are appealing to the Government of India to advise, instruct and direct the Indian foreign missions in the Middle-Eastern Countries to amplify their support and assistance to the Indians.

Coming back to India, what steps the Government of India is taking to bring back large exodus of layoff foreign workers? Does the immigration department is prepared with testing and screening for this large number of people arriving from various countries? What will be the procedures and norms that has to be followed by arriving passengers? Do we have enough quarantine facilities throughout the county for lakhs of people arriving? Its high time that the government should start putting things in line before the Sos Call’s start coming from these countries for immediate evacuation. (Newslines)
